Details from RPS.

It's a closed beta, so chances are you'll get the app, try to log in, and it'll tell you it doesn’t want to play with you. Is anyone here in the beta?

I downloaded the app on my phone a few hours ago via the Android Market - I entered my Steam username and password, filled in a code from SteamGuard, then got the message, "Thank you for your interest in the Steam mobile beta. We have made a note of your account and will be sending out more invites shortly."

Looks like I'll have to wait for a while :P

It will not even install on my BOIP (Bad old IPhone), as it requires at least a 3GS, and I am missing the S :)
Someone on the steamgifts forum just posted some pics of the app and is answering questions about the android app http://www.steamgifts.com/forum/vACx5/steam-mobile-android

doesn't look bad in my opinion, looks almost exactly like the normal client designwise (of course optimised for a smartphone). But as we all know the current steam design is already a couple of years old. It will be interesting to see if and when they overhaul it.

The last major UI update of Steam was in April 2010, that's not that far away. I don't really have any major gripe with the current design, except for the stupid insistence on putting their icon in the notification area even on W7.

There are some changes I would like to see too.

First, if you look at the store page it really seems that it is optimised for quite small screens to the left and to the right there is nothing just blank space. would be great if the client would fit the store to your resolution. Maybe the additional space would give them some more options regarding design possibilities.

Second, the design is quite dark. I understand that many people like this - but I'd prefer if there was at least an option to have a version which is maybe a bit brighter

My third and last suggestion would be on the technical side of things. I would very much enjoy if the client would have an increased performance -> run a little faster

also to get a bit back on topic: is anyone of you guys already in the beta?

You may want to try custom skins; some of them are much lighter than the original. Most are kind of crap, though.

Good, because it's not available on WP anyway :P

Ye, I know. Just saying that there is no need for an additional service. Its a damn phone, not a gaming machine.
sometimes I would be happy to have a service like that... especially if there is a 1 day only sale I am interested in, but don't have access to any "normal" computer to buy it.

It seems some people were asking for it on the Steam forums so at least there was some demand. It's just a chat client and a storefront with some community features. I don't see Google or Apple allowing them to sell apps for their phones anytime soon.

Apple, no, but Google is no problem. Similar to what Amazon has done, Steam is free to setup their own Android marketplace without any Google endorsement; people just need to allow non-Market apps to be installed.

You can still log in to the website and buy stuff. Steam isn't required for that.

As I said, when I don't have access to an computer!

Accessing the Steam Website with an 3G is horrible.
