Does anybody tried good old games on Steam? You can find few real gems there. I'm talking about games like GTA, Wolfenstein, DOOM, Commander Keen and more. I bought Max Payne series last week and I love it. The way they tell a story is amazing (incredibly dark comic book full of metaphors ). Now I am going to buy good old Commander Keen. I have so many memories about playing it with my friend back in 90's. I can't wait to relive them all. And what about you guys, do you like Steam or not?
Note: That's not an ad. I hope everybody agrees that Steam isn't really a direct competition to GOG, so I won't get banned. Anyway I better buy a game from GOG quickly to compensate :)

TBH, GOG, for me, is a good thing. I don't like the way Vale are running STEAM to much, with the hole 'we can kill your account at any time' thing they have, so I general only get games made by Vale of it. If Max Pain comes to GOG however, I would buy it from here. (hint)

Oh yes, I bought X-com series from Steam and I'm happily playing :D It was well worth it. Since I like Steam service in general, I have no problems with buying games from it :-) Only need to have Steam launched while playing is disadvantage for me, so GoG still kinda wins :D

Well, yeah, DRM-free is the best way and I love GOG too. But I don't think Valve would kill your account for no reason. And compared to retail "one install only" drm games, Steam looks like better alternative. At least you don't have to keep your DVD in drive all the time. And as long as Steam is the only place to buy certain games I'm gonna use it. Just my opinion.

To be honest, this does not seem like the place to come and promote Steam.
Many people are here because they DO NOT want any form of DRM, and Steam is a form of DRM.
I am glad you enjoy the games you bought, but give gog as much time as steam has been around and you should be able to scratch any old gaming itch you might have. At least that is what I am trusting to happen.

Read the terms of service. Valve is no stricter than GOG in this regard, the difference being that Valve are more able to detect abuses of the service. Also, a lot of valve bannings you hear about are actually automatically triggered VAC bans caused by people using hacks in VAC-enabled servers. Excuse me if I have little to no sympathy to people who think using an aimbot in public play is acceptable. Besides, this does not affect single player in any way. Of the rest of the complaints, a lot turn out to be hacked accounts rather than banned ones.

I understand what you mean but I don't promote Steam. I think many people are here because they like old game and not because they hate DRM. And if Steam (or anything else for that matter) lets you buy and play old games than why not to talk about it? There may be people who doesn't know about old games on steam. As I wrote above I agree that GOG is better. Steam is just another alternative for people who love old games and this is general discussion forum... In any case, no offense meant

I've got GTA/GTA2, as well as every single X-COM, and Quake title available. (Sadly, that includes ETQW.)
I really do like the support that 2K is providing for X-com, it's really working out well, and even better is the ability to tweak the Dosbox use without having to jump through a bunch of hoops to configure it. It is, essentially just editing a config file. Not like these newfangled three-dimensional games that try to hide their settings in proprietary files.

ETQW isn't that bad, it reminds me of a mix of Battle Field 2 and Battle Field 2042.

I have a friend who got banned for hacking in single play. Yer, he was hacking, but it was in single player! I call that no reason.

Was that a VAC ban or was the account disabled? If the former, was he running his own server - if VAC was enabled, then he asked Valve to VAC ban anyone who hacks on that server. Its not Valves fault if someone accidentally enables it and users really should pay more attention when setting up private servers.
If the account was actually disabled, did someone claiming to be from Steam support appear on friends? If so, that was a phisher regardless of how convincing they were.
There are other possible explanations, but these are the most common. Valve do not disable accounts for hacking. At most, you get VAC banned.

For old games through Steam, I have Deus Ex, Sin and Half-Life: Source, all very enjoyable, if you can get past the extremely dated graphics. For semi-old games through Steam, I have Beyond Good & Evil, Thief: Deadly Shadows and X2. BGE and Thief are great, but I just can't get into X2.

Steam actually installs SecuROM DRM on at least one game ATM. This means you can be prepared for it to do the same for more.,
This is in addition to its own log on to play type of DRM. So you've got DRM x 2. Don't think you're escaping DRM by using Steam.

I don't think you can separate the two very easily at all. One of the things they like about old games is the lack of DRM.
That question can best be answered by the owners of the GOG forum. It seems to me they are so far quite permissive, but this is a business. (I'd go further -- it's a darn good business for the community and well worth our support.) I wouldn't blame them for keeping the Steam posts and promos to a minimum if not eliminating them entirely. After all, each customer only has so much money to spend, and promos for Steam can have a negative impact on GOG's bottom line. This is a private business and I think it's fair for it to protect its interests. If they are willing to host threads that are plugs and raves for competitors, their decision. If not, I wouldn't blame them in the least.
