I use steam for Valve games and old games usually. The id games I got off of there I don't even use with steam, I installed them only to get the core files so I could run them on an a source port. Every old game I have off steam isn't installed with steam and is on an a source port (doomsday etc).

Sirrah: Well, yeah, DRM-free is the best way and I love GOG too. But I don't think Valve would kill your account for no reason. And compared to retail "one install only" drm games, Steam looks like better alternative. At least you don't have to keep your DVD in drive all the time. And as long as Steam is the only place to buy certain games I'm gonna use it. Just my opinion.

Blarg: Steam actually installs SecuROM DRM on at least one game ATM. This means you can be prepared for it to do the same for more.,
This is in addition to its own log on to play type of DRM. So you've got DRM x 2. Don't think you're escaping DRM by using Steam.

You just need to research what you buy like anything else. All as it takes is putting starforce on your computer once to fry it. Good luck getting that sucker off, I had to reformat my buddies computer because he couldn't do a simple google search to find Rainbow Six: Lockdown (is that the one?) had starforce. Most games on steam have no drm aside from the program itself. A little looking can save you a lot of headache.

Faithful: To be honest, this does not seem like the place to come and promote Steam.
Many people are here because they DO NOT want any form of DRM, and Steam is a form of DRM.
avatar
Sirrah: I understand what you mean but I don't promote Steam. I think many people are here because they like old games and not because they hate DRM. And if Steam (or anything else for that matter) lets you buy and play old games than why not to talk about it? There may be people who don't know about old games on steam. As I wrote above I agree that GOG is better. Steam is just another alternative for people who love old games and this is general discussion forum... In any case, no offense meant

Fixed some stuff, not upset, just figure it might help, would have done it in a PM but that is not an option.

The games that are listed to have third party DRM:
* Crysis (SecuROM + 5 Activation Limit)
* Crysis Warhead (SecuROM + 5 Activation Limit)
* S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Clear Sky (TAGES + 5 Activation Limit)
----------
Suffice to say the forums for those three games were on fire with how pissed off people were about it. The consensus is pretty much the same. Steam is the acceptable DRM solution (for them), and to have SecuROM or TAGES put on top of that is unacceptable.
Supposedly Gabe Newell knows of the problems, and is trying to improve the situation.
Yeah, I never bought those games, but I can't believe they'd do something like that, that's ridiculous. if I was Gabe I'd be all 'lol, no extra DRM or else it's not being on my service kthxbai.'
Originally the warnings weren't in place on the Storefront. As soon as people started having issues though, ValvE put in the warnings, and started issuing refunds to people who bought it before hand.

Blarg: If they are willing to host threads that are plugs and raves for competitors, their decision. If not, I wouldn't blame them in the least.

I know I wouldn't blame them either. On the other hand there is not a single game, as far as I know, that can be bought from both services. So, practically, they aren't competitors. Of course owners of this forum can look at it from different point of view. As I said I wouldn't blame them. And I still kind of think that most of the people would be there even if GOG had steam-like DRM. Maybe I'm wrong...

One of them was typing error :) Anyway I'm not upset. I'm glad if anything. English is actually my third language. I know it's not perfect but I'm working on it. Hey, does that mean that my other posts were ok? Great. And yes, private discussion would be better. At any rate, feel free to correct me if you like.
And may I ask you personal question? You're locker of what? :)

I didn't know about that. That is completely unacceptable.

Yeah, your other posts seem fine, I figured English wasn't your first language. Wecs are nothing. I had signed up for the gamespy network a long time ago, and used a random name generator they were using, and it gave me Weclock, so I decided to use that else where, and given the mythic and lore of myself at these other beta testing sites (mostly just source mods, I've gotten out of that though) they called me Weccy and Wec Locker, stuff like that, so Locker of Wecs came about naturally through other people.

I was also noting that people usually have only so much money to spend, and so much time to spend playing games. So any game seller is competition for any other, even if they sell different games. Kind of like how Kentucky Fried Chicken is a competitor to Taco Bell even though their product is very different. You can only eat lunch once.
