OfflineGamer: Hello there.

I was a huge fan of Steam, I used to say it was the only reasonable DRM... that was before I started working on a ship (no internet for months sometimes).

The offline mode never worked, so I had to "find a way" to get my games working. It was an absurd because I bought all the games and I had to look at shady and potentially risky means to play them. It seems Valve never fixed the offline mode, I can't say for sure though since I've never bought any other game on Steam.

The 'offline' players are a minority on Steam and Valve only look at the numbers. We certainly are <1% so there's absolutely no respect for us.

GOG on the other side is just brilliant... I only think it could have more anti-piracy protections, because piracy is running wild for GOG games and it's a fact that more pirates=less buyers, and less buyers=pricier games (sorta). And some games in GOG are kinda pricey imho.

GOG is hassle-free for both buyers and pirates... the ideal would be something hassle-free for buyers and hassle-filled for pirates. Steam is getting hassle-filled for buyers and hassle-free for pirates (except online features, Steam games are pirated on day 0, with unlocked extras and dlcs included), and most other distribution services (specially from big companies) are exactly like that. They make you regret not having pirated their games because the pirates are happily enjoying their games while you are dealing with their moronic DRMs.
I think it's just your PC that's broken if you can't get offline mode to work.

Nope, I don't know if they fixed it these days but it was a widely known issue back in the days, even Valve admitted it.
Steam sucks.

No it is not. After 15 days you can't play offline anymore.

rtcvb32: Seriously?

Wow... Dick move Valve...
... The whole rest of the topic is about people testing and disproving this. So no, not 'seriously'.

Fenixp: No, not 'seriously'.
I haven't looked past page 3 from like months ago, and i don't want to scour the topic. So if that information's wrong, then i take back my post as it's irrelevant. But learning that the offline mode might have changed would be very important to know, even if i don't touch steam anymore.
If it wasn't against the rules, I'd sell my whole account along with my 170 or something games.

Post 402 is the latest that explains how offline mode works. The "change" that happened a year or so back was that you no longer needed to be online to set offline mode, if you started Steam and there was no network connectivity, it would immediately prompt you to start in offline mode.

You guys who say Offline mode expires after xxxxx days need to check the fact and stop spouting nonsense.

There's a fine damn reason I dislike this forum's biased hate towards Steam.

Be an educated folks don't be ignorant ones.

yep steam is down right now but my client managed to download a update and went into the offline mode after updating fine.

Most people may have encountered issue going offline specially when they crash the client or clean up its log in details via 3rd party software like cc cleaner .

But in normal situations it will go into offline mode

most of the forum are with reasonable members but i would ignore anything rtcvb32 or niggles say about steam both are known to jump into the hate steam without any proper reason or proof. Just flat out hate ignore them.

btw steam just survived another ddos attack , some parts of it were affected like community , store etc but they were not able to fully shut it down since the download servers are spread across the world

I wasn't trying to jump into a rant, or trying to make unsubstantiated claims. Guess it depends on how pent up i am when replying to these types of threads...

Besides I got seriously burned several times in a row from steam's DRM and implementation... those still feel fresh...

then do share those experiences and get over it , instead of holding it in and suffering . Make thread mention how you got burned by steam maybe then people will understand

Probably a large scale attack like that would bring GOG's servers down for hours.

Steam offline mode:

Offline Mode is designed to be indefinite. You can't access any of Steam's online features such as friends lists or saved game synchronization, of course, but the client should allow you to run in Offline Mode for as long as you like.

In case some people still don't know how to make Offline Mode works: https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=3160-agcb-2555

You are dishonest here :

i followed your link , IF you were really honest you should have quoted this :

"Many of the older games on Steam were using an older authentication system which has many known issues with Offline Mode and is incredibly difficult to maintain - it was written for a time when there were dozens of games on Steam, not thousands. We are in the process of upgrading every game in the Steam catalog to a newer authentication system (and fixing bugs that result from the conversion), but this is a slow and time-consuming process. Some day soon, once this work is completed, we will eliminate the old authentication system (represented by the ClientRegistry.blob file) and Offline Mode should immediately become much more robust. "

Now, since I AM honest ; witth the date of this post, probably many of those have been patched , but with the numbers of games on Steam , probably not all.
