Just restart the client in offline mode before closing the connection after a client update and you are golden. Most of the times it works when not offline also, but it sometimes resets the credentials after an update so it needs to be online to store them again.

So to be safe, when you update Steam - just restart in offline mode once when you are still online to make sure it saves the new credentials properly.

isis12: That's odd. I have always had it in offline mode for ages (more than 6 months at a time probably) and that has never happened before. And even if that was just a bug that has persisted for several years on my machine, it would still not explain why I get this error today since I have logged in yesterday.

P1na: It might have to do with the way you logged out. try going online, then restart it offline, and then get the firewall in place.
Alright, I have deactivated the firewall rule, logged into steam, restarted it in offline mode, closed it, then activated the firewall rule again. It now starts in offline mode as it should. I am pretty sure that's exactly what I did yesterday though so I kinda expect it to stop working again tomorrow. But we'll see. I'll keep you posted.

Sorry but I can only tell you what I have experienced and for the last 3 years of irregular Steam-usage it has been these intervals for me.

If there are revisions where it doesn't occur - I don't know, but on my ticket with the Steam support I only got a standard reply that it is intended to work as it does.

Oh, my bad. I didn't want to imply that I don't believe you. Just saying it worked for me before and now it doesn't so at least the timed credentials thing can't be universal.
Maybe it really has something to do with the exact order in which you put the client into offline mode with regards to the firewall blocking as p1na and amok suggested.

I'm not taking any moral high ground, I simply refuse to play a game with DRM. So if I want to play a game and the developers don't release a DRM-free version, I'll get a cracked version.

While frustration is completely understandable, that still doesn't really entitle you to pirating and still getting the game. It does entitle you to saying fuck you, I'll just ignore your products until you get your shit together.

Piracy is still a more positive number than no number, man.

Valve has always been vague with how long offline mode was supposed to work. Before either they let it keep going, or it was bugged and never expired. Now sometime over the last few months they changed/fixed it to two weeks.
Yep. Support wont even discuss the issue or provide a definitive answer about this :/.

It's not limited to two weeks, if it is there's something wrong.

And this statement in answer to someone else stating the exact same thing as you about the two weeks is hardly vague:

This is not actually true - Offline Mode is designed to be indefinite. You can't access any of Steam's online features such as friends lists or saved game synchronization, of course, but the client should allow you to run in Offline Mode for as long as you like.

That said, there are many components involved in Offline Mode, and some of them have known issues and bugs which we are continually working to improve. We're aware that it doesn't always work as flawlessly as we want it to, but please keep reporting bugs with Offline Mode. It is not broken 'by design'.
