Steam forces .NET over top of my already up-to-date .NET
and overwrites all of the security updates.
Thus leaving me with a shit load of .NET updating to do all over again.

I love how it installs .NET to seemingly totally random drive each time. Several times it even installed it to my external drive, which contains only media and never had single program installed. (The same goes for drive D, but at least it's internal one). Oddly enough, only drives which never were targeted by Steam .NET installation is drive H (game back ups) and drive F, the one containing Steam and all games. :-)

Just let the option to prevent auto-updates work, and apply it to .NET and DirectX.

It's a simple solution they don't want to enact because a ton of people are on Steam for convenience reasons.

Skunk: Ram and processors don't sell themselves. At least, Microsoft thinks they could use a little help, and if it lines their pockets as well, all the better. Their 2018 goal is to require 8GB of ram as a minimum for Windows 9. The new Minesweeper will require a quad-core processor and 2GB of video memory to achieve minimal settings at an acceptable framerate.
Have you even tried windows since 7? It's actually been in reverse since vista each version of windows has been leaner and faster. I know it's a joke but it's pretty much dead in the water these days. Oh and according to rumours win9 may release as early as next year possibly for free...

No, not especially. I tried Windows 8 for about two weeks, but at the moment, I'm still using 7 right now. Didn't care for 8 in the slightest, and even then, I really only use Windows for things that don't play well with Linux like certain games, programs, and Netflix, so I'm not terribly interested in upgrading.

I personally don't like the style of Windows 8 so I'm not too interested in upgrading either.

If it installed .NET 4.0 "again", it means that installed a different targeting profile / package. 4.0 has the Client Profile, the standard one, and the multitargeting one. Usually, the Client Profile is installed through Windows Update and contains most used APIs, but if an API isn't it in, the system would install the standard profile.

EDIT: The mutitargeting profile is mainly for developers. /EDIT

Would you like for a game to crash instead of installing the things it needs to run?

Whenever Steam tries to update .NET and such I always click cancel; it makes things go faster. Just keep on canceling what it wants to do till it works basically. :P

Even if the .NET install is proceeding because it has alternate code that I'm missing, it still overwrites some hot fixed code and leaves security holes.

A lot of times that doesn't seem to be the case, however, it just looks like the basic .NET installer being forced to overwrite the previous and up-to-date installation.
