I have never made any online purchases before. Until yesterday. I bought Witcher yesterday, and I bought Witcher 2 today. GOG games are the first purchases I have made online, and are very likely the only purchases I will make online.

I was skeptical on non-hardcopy games. But I finally decided to trust GOG, and it was the right thing to do.

Personally, when I choose to buy a game, I want to own that copy of it. Meaning that I am in control of it, I can install it anytime I want, and I don't have to bind it to a single account, and I don't have to be logged in when I play it.

I do not like online activation DRM, such as Steam or Origin. Even if I only have to activate it online and register for an account only once, and never have to do it again, it is still one time too many.

It is true that almost everyone has internet these days, and can easily activate a game online. However, I personally view that if I am to connect to the internet, it will be because that I chose to be online, and not because that the game dictates that I have to be online before I can play.

In other words, I believe it should be my choice whether I want to connect to the internet or not. I refused to be placed in a position, where I am forced to connect to the internet and register an account, simply for the benefit of the game developers.

What I hate in general, isn't actually Steam itself. It's the retail games that FORCE THE USER TO INSTALL THE GAME CLIENT, CONNECT TO THE INTERNET, REGISTER FOR AN ACCOUNT, AND BIND THAT GAME TO A SINGLE ACCOUNT FOR LIFE.

Games like Borderlands 2, they force me to use Steam if I want to play their game. They don't give me a choice to not use Steam. Not only that, I have to tie the game code to a single account, and it can never be reused. DID I MENTION THAT THE FRIGGIN DISCS ARE WORTHLESS AFTER INSTALL?! No one else can use those discs, so you might as well throw those away!

And don't even get me started on Ubisoft and that retarded Uplay. It's worse than Steam, because it doesn't allow a redownload of the games!

Why the hell should I have to register for an account, and log in to a server to ask for permission to play the game? Why the hell should I use Steam, if I hate it? I own the physical copy, I should get to decide when I play it!

What is the absolute worst thing ever to be invented for computers and the Internet?

Viruses/Worms/Malware.

What is the second worst thing ever to be invented for computers and the Internet?

DRM.

To GOG and the staff, I'll like to personally thank you for your efforts to making your games DRM-free, in a time where almost every game developer and publisher forces Steam on the retail-game purchaser for god-knows-what reason. You give me hope in PC gaming.

I am in full support of GOG. However, I am not against piracy. To me, pirates are not the enemy. Developers and publishers that force me to use Steam are the enemy. If you ask me, these companies that force Steam on users should all just go to hell.

What the hell is up with all of the Steam hate threads recently? Is the new "spampocalypse", or what?

I could've sworn we had a thread for this but it seems to have sunk too far for people to find themselves in it.

Uplay lets me redownload FarCry3.

Dear Santa,

Yours truly,

I suspect 1 pissed off person is using multiple accounts (the threads I saw all were made by users registered this month)
Or people signing up because they don't like Steam and want to yell it

Not necessarily, the last 2 were basically rants at some things Steam couldn't necessarily help but both were fixed rather easily. This one seems to be your regular No-DRM soapbox rant.
I havent had issues with Steam offline mode, but perhaps OP has?

Anyways, I think GoG and Steam compliment each other very well - but thats where I draw the line, no Origin etc no söör :)

About binding games to one account only - well, with the games costing as little as they do and all the humble bundles and such, I really dont see problem. Well, the there is the "Bad Rats" -dilemma Total Biscuit mention ofcourse and I agree - but even that is easy to solve by making one folder for the stuff you dont want to see..

...And ofcourse, its pretty likely they may add game selling/exchanging or whatever ability in the future. Who knows - all I know my gaming hobby is waaaay easier these days compared to time I moved from Amiga to PC -world....
