drmlessgames: In case anyone hasn't noticed, not only does steam now include a "games at 4.99$ or less" option in the front of their store, but now they have Broken Sword 2 and 3, both available at Gog, for ... 5.99$. :D I think that's awesome, a sign that GoG is finally becoming viable competition. : ) They now have Gothic 3 too at 20$. When's GoG adding Gothic 3, I need to complete my Gothic collection. : )

bansama: The games under link on the Steam store page isn't actually anything new. It always used to be a filter option on the Steam store in the layouts prior to the current one. All Valve have done in that respect is add it back.
However, they are certainly feeling the heat -- they dropped the price for Tropico Reloaded down to $9.99. Impulse too are feeling it, as they dropped the price for Tropico Reloaded to $7.49 ish for the weekend (or perhaps for good, their "on sales" tab is so ****ing useless these days it's difficult to tell.
Either way, if there's a game is sold on other places as well as GOG and I don't already have it, there's no competition. I'll be buying it here.

Kingoftherings: Eventually Gog's catalogue with overlap with Steam's a lot more. In a few years, Gog might pick up some of the new games that Steam has right now.

bansama: That's actually a very common myth. Valve have far more say over pricing than they like to let on -- and this has been mentioned by several developers/publishers.
Steam got 70%, there isn't any big heat.
Let's not take an estimate made by Stardock to be too exact. Remember they also claim to have 10% of the market which both GamersGate and D2D have called doubt over.

taczillabr: Well, I know steam has a lot of control over prices more than publishers. But why the price for Tropico dropped on Impulse and GG too? It isn't Kalypso that dropped for all of them and then GOG got it?

bansama: The price drops did occur after GOG put it up for sale yes. As to whether the publisher told them to do so or not, I don't know. But the timing was interesting and was certainly after the GOG release.
As for Steam's market share, I don't think anyone can deny they have the largest slice, but by how large that margin truly is, I don't think anyone really knows as all the pertinent information is protected by a multitude of NDAs. But one thing to think about is how much of Steam sales consist of people rebuying games such as Counter Strike following a VAC ban?
