Sucks about metro 2033 being steamworks. I'll skip it then.
I got into the OnLive beta.
So you need to pay monthly and ALSO pay for games.
The interface is awesome but the games play at 720p...... which makes it look like your watching a youtube video.
SO I AM PAYING FOR THE GAME AND ALSO MONTHLY, JUST SO I CAN PLAY A SINGLEPLAYER GAME AT 720p!?!?!?!?!?!?!?
phew....... it feels good to let that out. :)
But seriously, OnLive sucks.........

Indeed. I am avoiding all games with Steamworks for now. I used to be okay with Steam, but now something about Steam just turns me off completely. For one, I am tired of the awful support. Secondly, I am unsure how secure a Steam account is - granted this applies across the board, but Steam is getting so increasingly popular that, while it may be the paranoia talking, it is often the source of horror stories involving stolen accounts. And indeed this is directly relevant to their retarded support anyway.
I'm just more comfortable with buying games off Impulse, GG and GOG, knowing that I won't have a third party software breathing down my neck all the time if I don't I choose offline mode.

Considering how deactivation happy they are now-a-days it isn't really paranoia. There are "what happened to my account" forum threads posted on their forum like 10 times a day, and that is just the small percentage of people who make a thread about it.
Hopefully it becomes so widespread it causes a backlash.

That's why I still prefer my games to be boxed up, without DRM. Ownership of said titles are yours, and no one but your own carelessness can cause you to lose the ability to own them. I'm not an aggressive doomsayer, but I don't trust the Internet (and it's anonymous netizens) with safeguarding my games.
-added- Whoa. I had no idea. Thankfully, all games I got off Steam - with the exception of Arkham Asylum - cost less than $10. I like Gabe Newell, and I think Valve's one of those rare devs who are not blindly following the doomsayers who advocate the death of PC gaming, but count me out of bad business practices where possible. That's just scary.

Heh. I remember when that topic was posted on Steam forums. Not surprisingly, it doesn't appear to be there anymore.

Yeah, and that is one of thousands of stories like that. Eventually it will seep through to the masses.
I like the post right below that:
"i wouldn't let one bad experience ruin your opinion of steam. they have a great seleciton of game and constantly have sales (i paid less than $10 for evil genius, counter strike source, railroad tycoon 2: platinum and madballs. combined). they got on my nerves with the lfd2 fiasco, but with 10 - 75 prcent off everything coming up in their Christmas sale, i can forgive."
They know exactly what they are doing with the Steam sales, the $2 games and such... they are roping people in and getting them used to a mindset where they don't own anything and praise Valve for allowing them to spend money on games.

Steam is also claiming exclusivity for many games. Games like Tropico 3, Borderlands (Secret Armory DLC) and Disciples 3 have exclusive content; others like Metro 2033 and SupCom2 are Steam exclusive. It is getting increasingly harder for other digital distributors to break past Steam's records. I can see why it is easy for the audience to advocate Steam as the "leader" of tomorrow, since it is monopolizing the industry in more than just sales.
Yeah. Kane & Lynch 2, Civ5, Mafia 2 and Fallout: New Vegas all announced Steam being forced as a DRM like they were doing everyone a favor. It's getting to be that every game is Steamworks now.
Someday every PC game will be a Steam game, like it is its own platform, and then where will we be? A single company controls the platform, just like the consoles. And people eat it up... it's no surprise, they eat up the consoles too for the same reasons. Convenience, ease of use, simplicity, cheap... that is what people want. It's why DVD audio failed and MP3 is taking over, it's why consoles won and PC lost, it's why eventually movie download services and streaming will win and blu-ray will taper off.
It sucks, but I guess we just have to get used to it. Not sure what else there is to do... I'm not skipping Mafia 2 and New Vegas, those are the two games I am most looking forward to for the next year or more. Steam works, it is functional... what can I do?
Keep speaking up, I guess.

Me, I'm holding off buying New Vegas, in hopes that someday Obsidian will release it without any DRM. I'm just letting my wallet do the talking for now.

I always enjoy reading the "thank you Steam / Valve " or " games you want on Steam " threads . ( sarcasm ) BTW , i was an idiot when i started the " indie games you want on Steam " thread .
and here's one of my favourite quote
" Retail games are genurally more expensive then steam store games..... -.-"

Well, wait until they become a de-facto standard, a requirement for every game, and maybe an anti-trust case could be looked for.

You've got Euro Steam. Of course that quote is going to seem like sarcastic black humour. However, if you look at retail outlets here and Steam prices,
However, there are far cheaper alternatives, so using that as an excuse for buying from Steam (outside of a sale) is a piss poor one.

It's a worthy stance, but at the same time you're a minority (steam dislike) within a minority (PC gamer). We don't have a lot of power, sadly.
I mean, people making their dislike known brought down Starforce, SecuROM and Games for Windows Live... it DOES work... but you need at least a majority of PC gamers with you. Steam has the opposite, a majority of PC gamers and a very loud support group all acting like it's the greatest thing since sliced bread. That is hard to fight against with your wallet.

It is on really old games, and most of their sales, but if you are the type of gamer who gets games early on you save a TON of money in the US by buying on amazon. I routinely get brand new games on release day for $30-40 because of Amazon's video game credits and discounts. I got Alpha Protocol on release day for $34... Singularity for $25... Prince of Persia FS for $25... etc. etc..

Obsidian is not in power to decide. Bethesda is.
