I tend to only ever buy on Steam when there is a deal going. I much prefer GOG, simply because you can backup your games AND if GOG happens to go belly-up (which I'm betting against) you can have the luxury of playing the games you bought.
Steam on the other hand? Dubious. I was actually going through the "Subscriber Agreement" thing last night, and since I was dead tired, little actually made sense. One thing that did stand out was that, should there be a permanent termination of service, Steam may release stand alone files for a limited time. May, but are not obligated to.
I have a huge problem with that, but yet I keep buying stuff on there. Steam, love to hate, hate to love?

Here is the history of steam weekend deals. Unless the games are normally priced double what retail is, I don't think the comment was accurate at all. The majority of the deals have savings of 50% or more.

I didn't really complain about the pricing, but I feel like I have to say this...
When it comes to certain countries, Steam, or the developers in question, tend to actually mark up the price.
The European pricing for instance, which I'm just basing on word of mouth, but closer to home, the Australian pricing for a certain Modern Warfare game.. What was it called? Call of Honour? Honour and Duty? Wait.. =P
So while it might be sunshine and smiles over in the States, other countries are getting a bit of a shafting at times.
That said.. I would have no problem with Steam, if accessibility, or stand alone executables, were guaranteed to be issued in case of permanent discontinuation.
Like any games store, physical or otherwise, I suss out the price. If I think they're asking way too much for it, I'll look elsewhere. If I'm getting extras for a measly few dollars more, then I'll gladly buy it.

Fair enough re: the deals. Perhaps it's just that I've never been interested in the majority of games they've put up for weekend sales. Yes, they sometimes have some really amazing deals but those are usually either: 1) Valve games that they can understandably put at huge discounts (since they don't have to worry about a third party), or 2) pretty few and far between (like the $5 deals). Also keep in mind a lot of the 60%+ deals you see are on games that just aren't that pricey to begin with, e.g., Oddworld so the amount of savings isn't that huge. It certainly doesn't compare to the deals I see on retail sights like gogamer, but, again, retail is an entirely different animal as they've already bought the physical copies and when they need to move inventory, they need to move inventory!
Believe me, I keep track of the weekend deals and, usually, the discounts are on older titles which, quite frankly, should already be 25 to 50% their release day prices. Hell, GTA 4 (albeit a bad port) is still $50 on Steam.
Qualifying all of this is the fact that I'm extremely cheap!
Oh, and as someone else mentioned, despite the fact that I'm in the U.S. it's crazy that they don't factor in monetary exchange rates when pricing to other parts of the world.
