Ah, I apologize if it was due to misunderstanding. I don't intend to be smug. My goal is to keep criticisms relevant and civil. I have found that many online arguments become personal without a need for such a shift. I could have the same disagreements with friends, in person, and we would remain friends. Online, however, objections are generally hostile.
Humor, which normally defuses hostility in real-life encounters, is especially fragile in these online arguments. Because it is more difficult to remove hostility in this environment, I prefer to discourage its growth. Personal attacks make enemies of us all and fail to progress our debates.
