Or something similar.

I tried to log in steam, it managed to proceed to the frontpage and then inform me that my account information is old. It asks me to input my password. Should I? I have never seen this before..

Edit. I closed steam, and now it won't log back in XD

So this is the future of gaming? How nice...

Was it YOUR password it asked for, or a Steamguard password (That they emailed to you)?

I get the bloody steamguard thing EVERY time I log in!
Steam nags me a lot but I have not seen that one. I read that Steam was down a few days ago for some people. Maybe it is just a temporary server interruption, complete with bewilderingly inappropriate error message.
Steam servers are having some trouble for a day or two now.

Are you trying to login through website or client? if website make sure you are not on a scam site, don't get yoru password stolen. if client, try again.
it was my steam password it asked. The box had my steam name already inserted..

And now I'm back in steam, it seems to work. This time it went fine, didn't have that account being old pop-up box thing again. Wth?

And no, I did not input my password when it asked that, was too skeptical.

Via client. Always via client :)

What was the exact error? Looking through the Steam error messages, I can't find one that would fit the situation you describe.
It looks like Steam's network had a hiccup at about the same time: http://store.steampowered.com/stats/
Probably just a temporarily thing, but yeah, the consequences of which are why many do not like to use Steam...
I noticed that it asked me to be logged in to be included in the daily giveaway of your ten first wishlisted games... and i was already logged in.

Well, it was in finnish, but the translation would be like:

"Your steam account info gone old" (vanhentunut, don't know how to translate it better)

The box was the regular box, with two fields. The upper one had my steam name already inserted (it was in gray, so it was not changeable) and the lower one asked my password.

The text was on top of the box.

Edit. And it was AFTER I logged in to steam. It opened the shop's main page, then that box came up.

Edit2. Outdated or out-of-date would translate it better

Expired, perhaps :p

I had that too, yesterday. It didn't accept my password, so I changed it. Then I tried to launch Skyrim (that I haven't had time to play in over a month) and Steam proceeded to tell me that "This game is not available at this time. Try again later.", and it refused to let me play it for well over an hour.

Have you clicked on the "don't save account credentials on this computer" or "do not remember me" options? Steamguard only works whenever you log in from a computer that hasn't saved your credentials.
I think that the problem is that I have 4 computers that I use on a regular basis.
1 has "Don't remember me" (the work one!)
I get the message each time I switch computers.
Are you sure this wasn't related to the whole stolen forum password fiasco?

The steam forums won't let me do anything unless I change my password because it is too old.

Ah, was probably this error:

"Steam_RefreshLogin_InfoTicketExpired" "Steam-lippusi on vanhentunut.\nJatka antamalla salasanasi uudelleen."

which in English would be:

"Steam_RefreshLogin_InvalidPassword" "Your account credentials have expired.\nPlease re-enter your password to continue."

As far as I recall, that tends to happen when there are problems with the Steam network and ultimately, should be nothing to worry about.
