Not sure how I feel about this... :\

Big day for reboots. First it was Cliffhanger, and now MGM and Warner Bros. announced they are teaming with Roland Emmerich and Dean Devlin to create a re-imagined trilogy based on the sci-fi hit Stargate, one of the biggest titles in the MGM library. Emmerich, who directed and co-wrote the original 1994 film with Devlin, is on board to direct this one, with Devlin producing. Those two are already hard at work on a new version of Independence Day at Fox.

MGM’s Gary Barber called Emmerich and Devlin “world-class creators of the original Stargate,” and said they will “bring their reinvigorated vision of this wildly popular property to audiences of multiple generations.”

gateSaid Emmerich and Devlin: “The Stargate universe is one that we missed terribly, and we cannot wait to get going on imagining new adventures and situations for the trilogy. This story is very close to our hearts, and getting the chance to revisit this world is in many ways like a long lost child that has found its way back home.” MGM’s Jonathan Glickman will oversee it with Warner Bros’ Greg Silverman. Warners will distribute with MGM handling some international territories. Back in its day, Stargate set the record for highest October gross and did near $200 million in global ticket sales. It went on to have a very successful run as a syndicated TV series.
More SciFi is usually a good thing in my book and to be honest people probably thought the original series was a dumb idea based on a so-so movie.
So I'll just remain cautiously optimistic.

Really enjoyed the original movie and series and I look forward to a reboot. Just hope they do it justice.
I'd like a reboot based on the original film. I loved the series but it did go off in a very different direction (partly because TV is different to film but partly because of other creative differences).

A new "film universe" version sounds good to me.
Generally speaking I try to lower my expectations about sequels, prequels and reboots in general when they were not part of the original plan. If I get to see them is thinking that they might be fun but not measuring with respect to the originals. Sometimes I am pleasantly surprised.

In this case I liked the movie but never really got a chance to watch the series.
Series was pretty good in spots (i didnt watch all the seasons though). The movie wasnt too shabby. Who will take the McGuyver role? ;)

Hey hey, Stargate the original movie was great! Not just in my then teenage eyes, I still like it even now. Especially that scene when the hero has to do the traditional "eat weird food or natives will be offended" thing.**

**Edit: I've been in this situation myself, was offered some gooey substance that turned out to be monkey brains.

OK? Not sure why a reboot, and not sure why a trilogy, but I'm fine with more Stargate if it's well done.
The only reason people still care about Stargate is SG-1. The original movie was... okay, I guess. But it has almost no crossover with the series. By the sound of things, the idea for these new movies is again to be some action-packed summer blockbuster thrill-ride. Even going by that alone, forgetting the series entirely, I can't get too excited. When I watch a movie from that era, I am always surprised by the moderated pacing and overall watchability of it, if only due to the limitations of the time. I can still sit down and enjoy it. Nowadays, directors seem to lose themselves in the spectacle of explosions and effects, liberally enabled and overindulged by modern technology.

By all that I mean to say: all well and good for them, but there's nothing for Stargate fans to be excited about here.
When compared to the TV shows (Even Universe), the movie is lacking in all respects. If its only a reboot of the movie, and not the TV show, then I'm not interested.
Emmerich has been talking about sequels for years. I think they've spent too long a time imagining where they could have taken the story to do a full reboot, but I suppose they could go that direction. I think they might do a soft reboot, as Jurassic World is reported to be.

I am glad they are doing this. Though these films are probably the last nail in the coffin for SGU. That part makes me really sad. If they do a great job in theaters maybe we'll get another tv series. I hope it does well.
Let it be good, or let it be dead.

To be honest, I'd rather like to see SGU continue :-/
SGU changed what Stargate was about, and not for the better. Used to be about light hearted adventures in space, with some tense moments. Then they turned it into a drama. Bad move, i say.
