I think I'd buy that Special Edition if I didn't already have the original game (I took a similar approach to the pre-GOG release of Heroes of Might and Magic V, with XP-compatible copies of Heroes III and IV included in the collector's), since I sort of need a memory one way or another.
As it stands, I'll buy the game. I've been too eager for more Starcraft to wait on the inevitable Battle Chest. I've loved pretty much every gameplay idea that is distinct for the Single Player campaign (branching campaigns, mercenary optional missions, a huge list of custom and legacy units to unlock...) so I'm sure I'll be entertained until the Protoss pack comes out. ...I suck playing the Protoss, I don't expect this to change things.

Not what I've heard. You need to activate online, and then if you're offline you can use a "Guest" account and use the save file you last used. You need an online connection to play muliplayer, however.

SP will require internet connection only if you wanna get the related achievements. Similar to how Steam works.

First sign of the UK price for the CE: Play is selling it for £69.99. That said, they're selling the standard version at £34.99.

There are shops here too listing the price at $69.99 equivalent for the CE.
