I'll easily agree that LAN's are incredibly stable, however it's not impossible for them to have problems. Yes, *mostly* that would be wireless, which I really doubt a competition would use. (that would just be dumb) However cards don't have to outright 'die' for a lan connection to be lost. There could be wrong settings, conflicting drivers, bad drivers, routers especially are infamous for having countless problems. Both LAN cards and Routers are unreliable in case of overheating (though mostly so for wireless).
Considering these networks are probably usually set up adhoc for the competition it's not completely unthinkable that something could go wrong on the hardware/setup side of things.
Yes, I would not be able to list 1000's :) Although I really have no doubt that over the course of networking over the past decades there have been easily thousands of problems ^^ My point however was to deny his statement that LAN's simply don't fail, which is not true (however unlikely in a normal situation), and it certainly has no direct connection to the internet provider.
