I don't see your point here. You're saying it's impossible to lose a LAN connection? Because I can tell you that can happen a 1000 ways, depending on your routers/network cards/drivers etc etc. It has nothing to do with your internet provider.

Somehow I highly doubt they'd use Wireless for a competition though.

The only way to lose it is pull the plug or the lan card went to sillicon valley :D

This is why on tournaments they should use CABLE LAN, not wireless LAN.

To loose a connection through cable LAN you have to really , really try.

I haven't lost mine through like 3 years, using it like 10 hours a day.

The normal explanation to loose wireless LAN like that... Too many devices conected. And with events like that with literally hundreds of smartphones there... oh yeah this reason is one of the best ;)

I'll easily agree that LAN's are incredibly stable, however it's not impossible for them to have problems. Yes, *mostly* that would be wireless, which I really doubt a competition would use. (that would just be dumb) However cards don't have to outright 'die' for a lan connection to be lost. There could be wrong settings, conflicting drivers, bad drivers, routers especially are infamous for having countless problems. Both LAN cards and Routers are unreliable in case of overheating (though mostly so for wireless).

Considering these networks are probably usually set up adhoc for the competition it's not completely unthinkable that something could go wrong on the hardware/setup side of things.

Yes, I would not be able to list 1000's :) Although I really have no doubt that over the course of networking over the past decades there have been easily thousands of problems ^^ My point however was to deny his statement that LAN's simply don't fail, which is not true (however unlikely in a normal situation), and it certainly has no direct connection to the internet provider.

If they used wireless it is completly normal something to screw up with audience that big and all those devices interfering the signal. And I don't believe they can be that much of a fools not to test the PC's before the tournament ;)

The strangest thing at this moment is the timing. MarineKing lost a battle that 99% was descieve to loose the game... and bam net down :D

Too many ifs are needed to a LAN connection to die like that and strangely they didn't switch anything on that pc. So I'm guessing either Wi-Fi or... somebody pull the plug :D

The fact that the computer disconnected from the local network does not mean computers can't or won't disconnect from Battlenet and still affect matches.

Starcraft 2 is not like a normal sport, where if something goes awry you can stop everyone from doing what they're doing, fix stuff up and then resume hostilities. If the game disconnects, everything goes down the crapper. There is no way to save your progress on a multiplayer match. I remember when I could save multiplayer matches on SC1 and resume them with my friends whenever we wanted. An official tool like this is what SC2 really needs, so the players can roll back to an autosave, at least on the tournament front.

I guarantee they weren't using wireless for a competition.

Why do people cry so much about LAN? It was popular in the past but nowadays nearly everyone's got a broadband connection.

Maybe the issue in linked articles could provide a clue...
