Tarm: Oh yes. SSI was really big for years. By the way I see posts about those games from time to time so there is a real demand.
avatar
Zoltan999: Agreed, I'd buy these and lots of the other strategy games they were known for all over again from GOG, if they were able to get them here. Probably a long shot, but we can hope and dream, right?
Instabuy for me too of course. :)

I AM hoping and dreaming. We'll just have to do it more and harder!

IronArcturus: Didn't SSI also make those cool flight-sim games like Su-27 Flanker?
They published it. The game was made by Eagle Dynamics, who now have succumbed to the dark side with their DCS series

So GOG needs to sign up with Eagle Dynamics in order to get Su-27 Flanker?

Zoltan999: These were awesome too
Heh, Dark Omen and Shadow of the Horned Rat. Actually they were originally published by EA and Mindscape respectively (SSI only responsible for Dark Omen's NA PSX release, oddly enough).

Ryan333: I'll probably be branded a heretic by some, but I really didn't care for the old SSI Gold Box D&D games even though I'm a huge CRPG fan. The two biggest hang-ups I had with them were (1) lack of an auto-map and (2) party-based combat that was real-time/non-pause. At least... I think they were all real-time. Were any of them pauseable?
avatar
Tarm: What? ALL of the SSI Gold Box games was turnbased. How did you get that switched around?

Edit: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gold_Box
Maybe "real-time" isn't quite the right term. What I meant was that when I played Eye of the Beholder, if I just sat there and didn't react fast enough the enemies would repeatedly attack me. Maybe "turned based with a time limit"?
avatar
Ryan333: Maybe "turned based with a time limit"?
I believe they called it a countdown timer. Which could be turned off in the settings, at least in some of the games which had it.

Eye Of The Beholder isn't a 'Gold Box' game.

IronArcturus: So GOG needs to sign up with Eagle Dynamics in order to get Su-27 Flanker?
It's always difficult to guess who's got the rights. However, Flanker and Flanker 2.0/2.5 had different publihers in Russia (1C) and in the rest of the world ( SSI / Mindscape/ Ubisoft ). But is there any interest on GOG's side for flight sims or for strategy games... ?

I did a check a while ago and there aren't few strategy games on GOG compared to other genres.
The problem is that strategy games is such a broad genre and there doesn't seem to be that many complex and wargames strategy games here. Probably too niche market for GOG to release more than the biggest known, easiest to get to work and cheapest of them. For example I'd love to have Wargame Construction Set here but how many copies would it sell? My guess is too few for GOG to put much effort into it. Another example is the V For Victory games by Atomic Games Inc. I'd be ecstatic if GOG released them but chances seem low. :(

You're right about Eye of the Beholder being real time. Problem was as Crispy78 said it ain't a Gold Box game. We was talking a bit around each others. :)

I vaguely remember something like that I think. Maybe. Seems like I didn't play with it on. How did it work?

Skoobaba: I, for one, would love it if GoG released the Eye of the Beholder games, and all those D&D games. So much heart and soul in the old rpgs. (It is nostalgia speaking :) )
Yeah, 2 issues:

- Ubisoft presumably have the rights to the old SSI games themselves but the rights to (A)D&D as a 'franchise' or 'IP' reside with WotC / Hasbro so something would have to be worked out between the 2 parties

- Ubisoft haven't bothered to bring ANYTHING to GOG in aaages, not even stuff they could just rubber stamp, no hassle, let alone stuff they'd have to sort out the publishing rights to, with other companies

The REALLY crazy one is the 2 Buck Rodgers games - they were SSI computers games that were based on TSR tabletop RPGs that used the same 'D20' system as (A)D&D buuut also had this extra layer of licensing to use the 'Buck Rodgers' character and universe - I'm not holding my breath for those ones to show up!

I still remember when I first played a demo of Su-27 Flanker. I was so engrossed in the game and, for the time, the graphics were really good! I think I remember flying around an aircraft carrier and "buzzing" the control towers! It was so much fun! I hope GOG knows that there is a lot of interest in these flight sim games!

Speaking of flight sims, has anyone ever played Darklight Conflict? It's a futuristic space sim, but it was a lot of fun. Unfortunately, the game is incredibly rare and very difficult to find today.

It simulated real time from within turn based, by giving your PCs a fixed time to react within each round. How long they had was determined by the settings, which would range from about 5 seconds thru forever (in effect, turning the timer off).

I'm not really into simulator games but Darklight Conflict do look fun. :)

Sounds like I would hate that feature so that's probably why I turned it off. Seems very stressful. Though I understand that some gamers would like it.

There is another flight sim game called Sandwarriors that was a lot of fun too. But that game is also very, very rare. Please vote for them all!

Sure why not? I like that graphics style so here have a vote. :)
