More that Square isn't Square anymore, like Bioware isn't the same Bioware, Bungie isn't the same Bungie that gave us things like Myth, not just dumbed down shooters. I'd say probably both, because the people that made those companies great moved on, but when we were younger, they were still creating awesome stuff. :(

Elmofongo: I never wanted a Final Fantasy 7 remake. Infact I am quite content with the game as is now.

Besides what do you want exactly in a Final Fantasy VII remake? Do you want a HD remake with better modeled characters and HD? Or do you want a complete built from the Ground Up Remake with Kingdom Hearts style Combat and no overworld and no Random Encounters?

Besides I find it hypocritcal of you wanting a Remake of FF7 while complaining about the glut of remasters, HD Updates, etc.
Well i know i wanted a remake. Higher resolution characters/polygons would have been one of the higher requirements, although taking it to PS2 quality for graphics would suffice.

Certain things that were glitchy in the game would need to be fixed, but as for if it needs a full remake, i'm not sure. There were a lot of the mini-games and missions where it just didn't feel like it meshed well. The only 'game' at the golden saucer worth playing was chocobo racing if you had your own chocobo, and you raised it.

Improved cutscenes, music that didn't rely on midi, or at least gave decent soundfonts for today. On the note of SoundFonts i recall listening to some midi files using Timidity++.

Maybe i'm one of many who just had good memories of FF7, and hearing of or seeing the graphical demo for the PS3 just made us WANT a remake/update, and they never delivered like asking us if we wanted a slice of cake and then never delivering because that wasn't the intent. IF they had that much done for the intro, why not make more? What's worse is if they do decide to make a remake of 7 later, it's already getting too late where fans who were excited for it aren't going to be the ones that would get it, and no matter how wonderfully or true they stick to the original source material it will get low ratings. It's already too late, it's a new generation of gamers.

square ceased to be since 2003 and has ever since then been pining for the fjords
though for me square's last gasp was in 2000
with ff 9 vagrant story and parasite eve II

i personally loath ff 10 but thats neither here nor there

i do think we have are jaded but sometimes it does happen that a game can instill that sense of wonder and awe liek they once did

im currently playing saints row 4 and it really is nothing but giddy gleefull fun in a way that most games arent anymore
either because we are jaded and cynical
the games are play safe pandering
the same boring games year in year out
or a barley inateractive movie with some game play tacked on to justify the 59 pricetag

i havent felt this sense fo wonder and amazement with a game in ages

last time a game really REALLY wowed me was oblivion when i got out of that bloody sewer and saw the world stretch out before me and i realised that my god i can explore all that

the 32X also wowed me more recently though that was more from a technical standpoint
a model 1 game is running on my megadrive !!
my god !!

i wouldnt mind a remake either but its too late now
it has taken too long

and if they release it now with ps2 level graphics then it will be seen as nothing but a crass cash in
if they release it later down the line with hd graphics most peopel who cared about it will have moved on

square just takes too long and their games tend ot be massivley anticlimatic because off it

final fantasy 13 was a huge dissapointment
pretty yes
but not much else

games these days and final fantasy certainly take themself too seriously
and final fantasy is a cgi movie wedged in between barley interactive "gameplay" bits to justtify its 60 dollar price tag these days

its just not very much fun anymore

I was going to say Square Enix did a lot more games than we realize, however glancing at the games first i notice Square Enix is just the publisher. (Star Ocean, Batman Arkham Asylum, Tomb Raider to name a few), which then makes me wonder what games they ARE working on...

Maybe Square Enix needs to disappear along with CapCom into obscurity...

mostly what they do is scoop up studio's these days and trying to be the japanese EA it seems

the only games square seems to give a damn about to develop them internally are final fantasy
dragon quest
and kingdom hearts

and the quality of the ff games have taken a nose dive ever since 9
and dropped of a sheer cliff with 13 ( and bounced off the cliff walls a few times and then hit the rocks below )
I think one of the biggest problems with Square these days is that all the developers who made the original FF games great (and all their other SNES RPGs) have left and started their own studios. And they are making pretty good games; Monolith Soft with Xenoblade and Mistwalker with The Last Story are the two that come to mind, but I know there are others.

Bravely Default was a great game, but as had been pointed out Square just oversaw and published it.

I'd still like to give the more recent FFs a try just to see what thew are like, but I think the days of Square are long gone..
they lost my interest at "console". A pity.

They've also got two smartphone RPGs coming up! Eh? Ehhhh? Everyone loves smartphones!

In all fairness, Dimensions 2 (Final Fantasy Legends: The Space-Time Crystal) could be okay, if they make it a genuine standalone RPG with no in-app purchases. It's not as out-of-the-question as it might sound, since Square has a few of those already, though most of them are remakes (if they release it on PC like they've done for some of their other full-length smartphone games, even better). Hell I'd even take episodic game like Dimensions 1.

The other smartphone game's a freemium game so you know how that'll go.

Borrow them from a friend for a week or two... Not really worth the purchase price unless you get it on heavy discount. Probably no more than $5 per disc. Thrift shops perhaps?

Just started lightning returns and it's a little annoying on the time limit imposed on you; Probably should have been playing it on easy until i know where everything is rather than stressing... maybe i'll start over...

give over
whats wrong with consoles ?
there is a whole world of console exclusives out there which are great games in their own right

and square like most japanese developers and publishers has been more console centered anyway

( now if you just mean this game then ignore this but discounting a whoel swath of games just because they are consoel games always struck me as silly
there are no pc gamers or console gamers just gamers and i tend to be platform agnostic if its a game i like i dont care what its on )

Tons of things are wrong with consoles, from my standpoint. For the current me, lack of a TV is a particularly strong point. The extra machinery would be another. I have a computer on which I can watch videos, chat with my friends, read stuff, and play. I don't want more machines.

I'm not going to the old PC vs consoles argument; although I find that just the standard input has an impact of the games that platform will primarily offer and I, like most people, have a preference on that matter. It's simpler than that: I have more games than I can play, and I need a way to filter them. I won't even consider a console game, same as I don't consider Uplay games. I've also been thinking to jump to linux and discard anything that isn't available there, but haven't yet.

The fact is, I saw "new square RPG" and was interested. Then I noticed it specified "cosole" and my interest disappeared. And yes, I know about the lack of interest of Japanese on the PC platform, but with all these Final Fantasys appearing on steam I guess I had some hopes.

Good news then! Square Enix put FF7 on the PS4.... from the PC port....

If you watch the crowd reaction, it goes from wild, to meh when you see it's unchanged...

edit: Also to note they are going to sell it for $16... Quite a few people are saying Square Enix are trolling us...

Honestly, I had a look at the PS store earlier this year since I got a PSP and whatnot. Having to buy the same game over and over for each console is one of the reasons why I decided not to spend any money on it.

Except for Blood Omen, they got me with that one.
