BlueKronos: Having played all of the Legacy of Kain games available on PS/PS2, I think you made a good choice there, Soul Reaver was my favorite of the bunch.

Thespian*: Hey, thanks for the kind confirmation, BlueKronos!

Did you have the chance to play SR2? If so, how would you value them in a ten point scale? Just out of curiosity. ;)
Sure did, SR2 and SR:Defiance. I think SR1 was the best in terms of gameplay and story. Felt a lot like a zelda game to me with discovery, exploration, new areas opening up as you gain abilities. SR2 in my opinion was a great game too, just didn't like it quite as well as the first since it's a direct continuation of the story and there isn't so much 'new' to enjoy. The combat did get some improvements in the second though as I recall, a few new things you could do which I appreciated, but almost seemed like combat was given more attention relatively to the puzzles and story. In the 3rd aka Defiance there were some definite graphical improvements and the story was nicely brought round to give an ending and some explanation of past events, but the twist of switching between the characters made it feel a bit disjointed gameplay wise imo. As I'm sure you're aware the Blood Omen games, while they share the mythos as the Legacy games, are considerably different and as I understand it were made by a different team. Would still like to see the first one here on GoG to complete the series - voted for it on the wishlist Blood Omen if you want to cast your vote.

I'd put Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver 1 at a 9/10, Soul Reaver 2 at a 8/10 and Defiance at a 7/10, Blood Omen 2 is probably the worst of the bunch since it has much less in the way of puzzles and different setting and no phase shifting (but then I didn't play through it to the end so don't want to give it a rating, maybe it got better :-))

Recently picked up Blood Omen 2 on GoG as I only ever got to play a little of that (rented as opposed to owned) so I'll have to go back and play that one in it's entirety. Plus I recommend using a controller if the windows port allows for it (or mapping controls if necessary) since these games plus a few others like Prince of Persia (not the original ones but the remakes) seem to play more intuitively with a controller imo.

edit: corrected sp
edit2: forgot the 10 pt scale ;-)

Thespian*: It's really very nice of you, Azrael. Thanks for your generosity!

I'd like to try my luck with one of the Legacy of Kain games (I'm a sucker -pun intended- for vampiric stuff since childhood, but never had the chance to play them), but I don't know which one I should pick to begin with. Blood Omen? The first Soul Reaver, perhaps? ;)

EDIT: In for Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver.

Good to know you decided for that game. I'm such a fan of this series, I still have all the games for PS1 & PS2 (except for Blood Omen 1), bought them here (and won Blood Omen 2), and later bought them for Steam on GamersGate during a sale... (:P)

I will post this here, in case someone else wants to know: If you want to start the series in a "canon" chronological order, you should start from "Blood Omen: Legacy Of Kain" and then "Legacy Of Kain: Soul Reaver", but because "Blood Omen 1" is not on GOG (ahem, yet... -_-), the sequel "Soul Reaver" is also a good start, but you will miss the base story and not fully understand the elements of the world of Nosgoth when you start the game. But the manuals have a good explanation of everything, and a timeline, so I recommend to read them... ;)

Now, "Legacy Of Kain: Blood Omen 2" is different, the game takes place between "Blood Omen 1" and "Soul Reaver" and it was developed at the same time as "Soul Reaver 2", but the development teams were different, and although they started together, the whole projects were divided, so although "BO2" takes elements and characters from the first "BO" and "Soul Reaver", the story in that game doesn't make sense at some points, especially for an important character you'll meet in "Soul Reaver 2" if you played it first. It was later explained that the writers handled differently the base elements of the story and their direction, so instead of calling the game "non-canonical", they prefer to call it "different time-line". But even so, I enjoyed that game greatly, and playing as Kain the whole time when he was young was a refreshing aspect for the entire "Legacy Of Kain" series.

The whole series in order is like this:

Blood Omen —> (Blood Omen 2) —> Soul Reaver —> Soul Reaver 2 —> Defiance

There is gonna be a new game called "Nosgoth", but it's a MMO... :(

More info about the series here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Legacy_Of_Kain
in for Soul Reaver 2.
i played Soul Reaver but forgot about Soul Reaver 2, Starcraft was taking too much of my time
