I have sent emails to several developers asking about DRM-Free releases and the most common response I get is nothing, followed by "we partnered with Microsoft on this game and are not allowed to release it without DRM." One dev told me that their game was Steamworks only and sent me a free Steam key for it. In a way it was a nice gesture, but considering I already told them that I refuse to use Steam it felt kind of hollow.

Even though I was never really into Space Hulk, I will send them an email as well. The more emails they get the more they will be motivated to explore a GOG release.
I wonder if they looked to see whether you redeemed the key?

*sigh*. another developer gives bullshit. What the fark is it with some of these people? do they NOT want people to give them money?
Thing is, how is this going to be any different from what they will do with their recent kickstarter (Jagged Alliance Flashback) and how that will be done drm free?.Makes me wonder

I have wondered about that too. The unused key is still in my email, just in case they ever do.

Absence of autopatching is one of the absolutely most annoying things about GOG. One of the absolutely most annoying things about Steam is the inability of opting out of individual patches.

Lol wut. Doesn't that make GOG the middle-ground, it notifies you of a patch but doesn't automatically force it like Steam? It's surely better than say Gamersgate, where you have no idea of knowing if a game is patched unless you manually check the game page and compare the tiny print at the bottom for version numbers.

I don't want to have to manually install patches like in GOG. With Triton I was automatically notified of a patch and then I could say, yes, no, yes to all and no to all on the dialog notifying me of the patch. What GOG lacks as a facility to automatically patch installed games. I only get a notification about an update when it is first uploaded to GOG's servers. It doesn't keep a single game up to date.

That wouldn't work with GOG because GOG isn't a client which installs the game for you, and knows where your directories are. In fact my favorite thing about GOG is that installers and patches ARE manual download which are downloaded and can stored and copied anywhere. That's kinda the point of DRM-free. Not sure why anyone would willingly want an online client to know details of your personal file layout.

And really, are you so lazy you can't manually patch a game? I fear for the coming generations.

My complaint amount to this: GOG SHOULD have such an optional client. It has nothing to do with laziness.

It's a general rule, there are rule. For something interesting I'd suggest you check out statistic on Steam Achievements, specifically the number of people who own games which they have only gotten one achievement (like the introductory one or something).

I mean, just look at the "card trading", items and all that crap Valve keep putting out. If anything Steam has proven itself the game platform for people who will do just about anything but play games.

I suspect the statistic is similar to the number of purchased games on GOG that have yet to be downloaded. Eyes are often bigger than one's stomach. :)

That was a flimsy excuse in the past, but GOG is one of the largest game stores these days. Or at least that developer that released their sales numbers had GOG at like #3 or 4 after Steam and their own website.

I'd look that up, but GOG's search engine still doesn't work right and Google just plain sucks.
