hedwards: Apparently, I tend to get the mega drive and SMS confused. Also we had no SMS equivalent in the US. That being said, the links I was seeing were equally confused about the systems.
... yes you did.

It was called THE SEGA MASTER SYSTEM.

Is Sonic and Knuckles there? My personal favorite, and no, I can't tell you why - I can just tell you that one of my proudest gaming moments was finishing it for the SECOND time :D

I actually have that cart sitting on my desk I as I type this. They do have S3 &K there, but AFAIK the only way to get just S&K if that's what you want is to buy the cart.

Actually, I've got a good collection going. S1, S2, S3, S&K, S1&K, S2&k and S3&k. And someday Sonic CD if Valve permits it.

You did get the Master System actually, it just wasn't very popular. The NES and Master System's places in the market were somewhat reversed here. I don't actually know anyone who had a NES.

Having said that, the SMS wasn't massively popular anywhere other than Brazil...

Well I think I am going to get Generations, the Kart racing game and Sonic CD.

I'm still on the fence about getting 1, 2 and 3 where they are so old and I'm wondering how well the Steam versions run and play on Windows 7. Anybody know about that? From some of the comments above it sounds like these ones are well worth having some fun with too if they work alright.

PenutBrittle: Have yet to play Generations. Maybe I will this week.
Well, long time Sonic fans have gushed over it so much it's starting to get a bit messy every time the hedgehog comes up in conversation. I'd say you'll probably enjoy it given how much you seem to have preferred the original games.

GOTTA GO FAST!

Bought Sanic CD and I've been thoroughly enjoying it, despite the US boss music being made out of nightmares.

Tempted to purchase that Sonic & Sega All Stars Racing, but the lack of multiplayer (not even local!) for a party racer kills it for me.

Also, Sonic Generations is as good as people say, especially with that soundtrack.

Falci: Any opinion on the Sega Racing thing? I'd like to hear one before taking the plunge.
It's terrible, and that's coming from someone who worshipped Sonic as a god when I was growing up, and liked most of the karting games. It's just rubbish.

On another note, what the hell is going on? I preordered Sonic CD on GG so I could get it the moment it was released, it's now on sale on Steam, and I still don't have my key from Gamer's Gate. Especially considering it's about to be Friday evening which would have ben the perfect time to get stuck into it, I'm pretty annoyed about this.
Not STRICTLY a Sonic game (in that he doesnt appear!!), but I sorta hoped it would have been in the sale - pretty forlorn hope...

Dr.Robotniks Mean Bean Machine - the best game of that type I've ever played...

Aw... that's bad, thanks for the info!

It's not on sale on Steam, actually. Most of the Sonic titles are discounted, but Sonic CD and Sonic 4 are not.

Sorry, I ment for sale, as in, you can buy it and play it. What was the point of me pre ordering it if I don't get to play it until after people who didn't even preorder it? I didn't pre order to save money, I did it so I'd be able to play it the moment it came out :(

Apparently, looks like they waited too long to release it. That was apparently in 1986 and the NES was released in 1985 just following the 1983-85 crash in the US video game market. I'm not sure why Sega thought they could release at that point and have any success with it. At that point Nintendo's standards more or less saved the industry here. You're just not going to compete with that with the previous crash so recent.

dirtyharry50: To me, the Sonic Generations and Kart Racing ones look really neat and maybe Sonic CD. But I wonder how good are the early ones which are only $2.50 each. So I figured I would ask the old games experts here about Sonic games. Which would be the very best one or ones to get, especially for someone new to this stuff?
People have been criticizing the Sonic Racing game but it's brilliant. It uses Outrun's powersliding mechanics but the tracks etc are good if you're a sega fan and the game shows a lot of care and attention. It is a straight up Kart game and doesn't do anything new for the genre though so if you're a Mario Kart fan you probably won't like it. Personally I've never enjoyed the Mario franchise & the last Kart Racer I played & really enjoyed was the first Crash Bandicoot one. Btw I'm in my mid 20s so hardly the demographic for it.

Edit: I have it on Xbox 360 btw which has both local & online multiplayer.... are you guys sure the pc version doesn't?

Positive. It sparked a lot of outrage that the online multiplayer was removed. It does have splitscreen local though.
