Digital hats are just as good.

Or, or, and just hear me out...

LucasArts.

Eh?
In all honest there is one thing where GOG is sorely lacking when compared to steam:

- Community features

Simple things like a friends list, seeing your friends wishlist, an IM service between friends, etc.

And that's not even getting into stuff like achievements, steam trading cards, posting screenshots etc.

I get not everyone likes achievements or trading cards, but they're optional and I quite like them

I'm down with that. :)
Well... I think GOG's basic identity as a website is offering Old games that have been updated to run on newer systems and some goodies including soundtrack, manual and artwork.

That said, a website that offers that in particular really will only appeal to certain gamers who... A like old games or B. Want to try old games.

Now add in the fact that GOG is beginning to get more into indie games doesn't really help either, by that it doesn't detract anything but it doesn't help due to Steam offering more indie games and well... more websites offering indies...

So there really isn't away for GOG to increase it's audience as GOG which stands for "Good Old Games" would really only appeal to a niche.

I prefer that GOG focus on its own advantages and not try to be like Steam in this regard. I think people come here because they prefer the focus on games, not so much on community (aside from a small number of forum people who browse and post regularly).

That being said, I wouldn't mind profile pages, but most of the others stuff I think can stick with Steam. Time spent developing those things is time that could be spent making deals, improving the catalogue, gather bonus content, etc. (although I suppose it would be different departments working on these things)

ElPrimordial: I think one way to do it, is by creating a genuine User Interface that resemble an specific videogame/genre and create the illusion that you're entering, not merely to a common store, but a videogame lobby, an videogame hall that prepares you to play the game you want to buy, the game you came to look for. This UI must wake great enthusiasm in the consumer's mind.

This UI must be divided in two stages: one, a general UI, open to whoever enter GOG.com. Could be thematic, according to current offer/spotlight game. The second one, configurable according to customers liking when they log in its account. At first needs to be simple, and its necessary at least 3 different options (such as RPG UI, RTS UI, Adventure UI). As the customers acquires more points* these UIs increase in complexity and also they can earn other UI types.
This is actually a really cool concept for a digital video game retailer. It would be rather expensive to design/implement with not much tangible return but man it would be cool.

I get that, but at the very least I'd like to be able to see my friends' wishlists. So I can surprise them now and again :P

Doesn't it refer to this parody of what a DRM-pizza would be like?

This FOOD PRODUCT has been manufactured for usage only in specific FOOD PRODUCT cooking devices and storage containers and might not be usable with the following devices:

* Some FOOD PRODUCT reheaters that have the capability of reheating competing products
* Some microwave heating devices with pre-defined “Pizza” or “Sandwich” buttons
* Any FOOD PRODUCT cookers which operate utilizing Celsius temperature scale
* Some FOOD PRODUCT cookers or reheaters with convection capability
* Some FOOD PRODUCT (FP-R/RW) reheaters designed for use in dormitory settings
* Some portable FOOD PRODUCT carrying containers
* Some serving and/or warming trays
* Some FOOD PRODUCT cleaning devices, such as generic napkins, paper towels or wet wipes-style products
* Some denture products, including partial bridges and unapproved full ceramic teeth replacements
You can guess what a DRM-free version would be.
I'll second the thoughts on profile pages and wish list. I know there is a way to do that already but a way for idiots like myself to do it would be nice, and totally voluntary of course. In all honesty there are some titles on my wish list I don't know f I want any of you knowing that I want.

Okay now I'm cross eyed.

Should you at any point decide to try and create a GOGWiki profile, do send a PM. I'll try to guide you through the needed steps, and I do think you should be able to do it.
Hell, after asking the questions I may have missed, you should be able to give instructions yourself ;)

The problem with GOGWiki is that it's not official.
Hell I've even forgot about it.

That's kind of the neat part about it. It's opt-in and not opt-out. :)

gogOS and GOG machines, that's the future of gaming, and GOG should do that move before others could copy the idea.
