Nothing like broad, all inclusive, stereotypical assaults on ones countrymen to start the day eh? http://publicshaming.tumblr.com/post/75447787843/speak-english-racist-revolt-as-coca-cola-airs
Sometimes I wonder if you actually know what youre saying and do so intentionally or if you unknowingly rail against the very tools you use to communicate.
Once again I have broken my new years resolution to remain out of inflammatory threads, ah well. I guess mission accomplished for you.

They are all full of shit. Right after their little tweets of outrage they went to their refrigerators and got themselves another Coke. http://publicshaming.tumblr.com/post/75447787843/speak-english-racist-revolt-as-coca-cola-airs
I guess these kids missed the "melting pot" lessons in elementary school about how we are made a great nation by the inclusion of people from so many nations all together.
Anyway, all nations have some assholes to call their very own. We are not unique there at all. I wouldn't let the behavior of these ignorant people bother you. They do not represent America.

The context in which that applies never comes up. How many things can you think of that apply to the Americas as a whole? That's sort of the point, the term America applies to the USA in most cases, it just makes you look intolerant to suggest otherwise.
GastonArg: It is used incorrectly, for example if in Argentina we start calling ourself "Canadians" and it's so popular that the term is accepted, it doesn't mean that it's not wrongly used, in USA is common even "correct" to use it but again that doesn't mean it's used correctly, it doesn't matter the language either (USA doesn't even have an official language..!).
hedwards: It's been in common use for centuries and it's completely correct to use the term. In English there isn't even a continent called "America." That "continent" Is really a super continent made up of 3 different continents. So, even in that context, it's iffy if America exists. The correct term for citizens of the USA is Americans.
And now I've wasted enough time on this silliness. At least you didn't try to call us USAian, which is basically just something that bigots do, rather than South Americans that confuse the terms for similar ones in Spanish.
hedwards: A lot of us do, it's just that we tend to get shouted down by the ones that engage in this sort of stupidity. And unfortunately, since they don't believe in birth control or family planning, they tend to outnumber us.
Moments like this are great when you're abroad to help with the homesickness. Remembering just how much of a shithole it can be at times tends to take the edge off it.

There are some even uglier comments in response to that Seattle player's post-game interview further down the tumblr.
The funny thing is that these people getting upset about the Coke commercial probably don't realize that 99.99999% of the products they use every day are made in part by the foreigners they detest. Plus, their ancestors were foreigners at one point (coming to America). Too many levels of hypocrisy and stupidity.
Best I can hope is that these people aren't breeding and passing their hateful views onto others.

spindown: The meaning of words and their correct use is just a convention between speakers of a common language. If the people of Argentina suddenly decide to call themselves Canadians then, yes, it will be correct (albeit confusing) to call them Canadians, at least in their own language. As I said, I understand why you don't like the way the word "America" is used. But this usage is centuries old, so it's not going to change, for better or for worse. By the way, it's not just people in United States who use the terms America and USA interchangeably. Brits, Australians and other speakers of English do it too. I agree with hedwards. I have never understood that idea. Here we call the continents "the Americas" collectively, but more commonly we call them "North America", "South America" or sometimes "Central America." So that's North American, South American and Central American, respectively, not American. We call people from the U.S., "American."
The irony is that this is an attempt to decry the alleged self-centeredness of Americans but to do so it uses the self-centeredness of Argentinians, Brazilians, whatever.

Oh man, where to start. Okay, will start with something that's been chewing on my mind since my last post - the term "my fellow Americans". Base response to that is NO. NOT EVEN CLOSE. I am claiming no fellowship with the ass-backwards glue huffing braindead masses. Not now, not ever. The closest thing to fellowship is that I'm sitting on one tiny section of a big pile of dirt, and a gods-damned horde of imbeciles are shambling across their own tiny sections, with a few people that aren't too stupid to breathe scattered amongst them.
As for the song issue itself, the bottom line is, a bunch of people who aren't very intelligent got offended because people had the audacity to sing "their" song in a different language, like they all had a hand in writing the fucking thing. And during the annual overpaid guys playing catch and hitting each other event. Oh, the frigging horror. Take a bunch of halfwitted racist dipshits and give them an excuse to show off diseased pack mentality while simultaneously displaying why abortion should always remain legal, and they'll jump at it in half a heartbeat. And yes, there's definitely a culture in this country. A culture of hate. Group A hates Group B because they're different, and that hatred is reciprocated in full. Now that I think of it, I guess I actually AM connected to the "culture" in that way, since I tend to end up hating members of both sides.
"True, English was not the first language used in this land, but no one is making that argument. Here is the one big fact, and that is English is the language of the United States of America. It's not official, it's not Law, but English is the language of this country.
I think Coke was trying to be clever and creative, but instead did something stupid. The commercial is a great commercial if it was intended for foreign audiences. However, they played it to an American audience during the super bowl. We often preach about being culturally sensitive, but what about being culturally sensitive toward Americans? Is it OK to be culturally offensive to Americans?
That commercial played during the super bowl to an American audience was culturally offensive to many Americans. It was bad. It was a stupid thing for Coke to do."
Right, English is the language of the country. Unless you meet someone who doesn't speak English. Then it stops being the primary language pretty fucking quickly. Pardon me, sir or madam, didn't you get the memo? If you don't speak the language I know, you are an undesirable, and must be deported posthaste.
Oh, the commercial would have been awesome if it'd been played in another country....For fuck's sake. Did people singing a song in a different language remind people that there's GASP! variety in people? And during the Super Bowl, a cultural high point....Can't even type that "cultural high point" shit with a straight face. Part of me wants to laugh, part of me wants to scream. But okay, okay, I think I've got it out of my system. Let's roll with the premise - in order to be "culturally sensitive", we'll all try awfully hard to keep those dirty dirty FOREIGNERS WHO ARE ACTUALLY CITIZENS out of your ridiculous half-assed repressed violence exhibition. Ever so sorry for throwing off your ability to focus on the combination of women in short shorts, potential crippling injuries, and purty pictures that make you laugh when they don't make your poor little head hurt from being overly complex.
Okay, time for a closer, and I see fish in a barrel....
"In America, diversity is respected and accepted...for the most part. More so than in many other places. However, there is a common culture and the English language is a part of that common culture. Coke did not respect that common culture.
I'm the child of immigrants, so I understand both points of view. No one is saying it is all about white people and cowboys, Jamyskis, you should be careful with stereotypes."
Might as well go with complete honesty and post what my response to reading that was....
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
Diversity respected and accepted? Yeah, in those little enclaves where the tables turn and the minority becomes the majority. It's yet another one of those things that people will pay lip service to all day long, but when the chips are down, they're just full of shit. If anything it's the opposite. Easy example - go get a job with a tattoo visible. Or some piercings. Or dyed hair. Your diversity isn't accepted, it's tolerated because others can't change it, let alone respected. Uniformity is the underlying goal, and drones are what's sought.

I think that's true for many if not most countries. The problem with "diversity" is that, while it sounds great and fun, in reality it's often hard to deal with. I could name dozens of examples why so, but the thing called "diversity" is basically a nice good-sounding word for "people who are and think differently". Also known as: a big pile of trouble waiting to happen. I'm the child of immigrants, so I understand both points of view. No one is saying it is all about white people and cowboys, Jamyskis, you should be careful with stereotypes."

The rainbow fantasy filled with unicorns where people of all cultures and races live in harmony is a pipe dream. The races part should be possible, the culture part? Fuck no. Never gonna happen. Cultures clash. They don't co-exist. A culture that finds alcohol illegal vs a culture that celebrates good wine, beer, etc. ? A culture that treats women as second rank vs a culture that pushes for empowered women. A culture that is about selfishness and getting what you can no matter how vs a culture of caring and support. And that's just naming a few.
The only way for cultures to co-exist, is to find a common ground - where cultures blend together for 80% and then the remaining 20% is easily forgiven or ignored. That's what the US did with Italian, Irish, etc. cultures - it basically borrowed bits & pieces and added it all to a melting pot and that became the American culture. Note though, that the original cultures are mostly gone, watered down - you still have an Irish vein or two for example, but it's pretty weak and there's almost nothing there to still call Irish.
So yeah, you're right when uniformity is wanted - but this is a human desire, not just an American one. It's just more vocal in the US where there's more conservative people - but in general, people like dealing with stuff they understand and having to deal with other cultures that have some incompatible elements is too much for some - then you have the racists and bigots and throw them all together and voila, one giant mess no-one dares to touch!

We have one. It's called "The Star-Spangled Banner". "America the Beautiful" is not an anthem.
