monkeydelarge: So? Give me one real good reason why the USA should stop being an English speaking country?
Easy, we aren't one now. Ever been down South? Even the people that claim to be English speakers don't really speak it not to mention most of if not all public and pay services are offered on a multilinqual basis. All the street signs where I live are in Finish. All the street signs in New Orleans are in French. All the street signs in Detroit are in middle fingers. That's what makes the whole argument kind of moot, we are a multiingual country. Whether It's official or not is kind of irrelevant as is your approval or disapproval of it. There are a lot of Spanish speakers here and just because it gets written into some law somewhere doesn't mean they are all going to stop speaking Spanish and make English their mother tongue.
Some days, I'm really ashamed of my fellow westerners. What a bunch of drama queens we all are.

I've been down South, many times. They speak English, just not perfect English. 99.9% of Americans don't speak perfect English. Nobody here is asking for people to stop speaking Spanish but yes, these people should also learn English and recognize this country is an English speaking country. You have not given me a real reason why this country shouldn't be an English speaking country. You are just pointing out things that you think should make this argument moot but it doesn't. Keeping this country, an English speaking is beneficial to this country. Turning this country into a multilingual country is not beneficial to this country. It's as simple as that. In Germany, there are a bunch of McDonalds restaurants with menus half in English and you can find Englsh everywhere there. A large percentage of Germans speak English. But Germany is still a German speaking country.

That's the point, you can't keep the country something that it isn't. Imagine saying "We need to keep this apple an orange." You can't because an apple isn't an orange and all the debate and social reform in the world isn't going to make it one.

But the founding fathers and most of the people who died to make this country possible were native English speakers and the majority of Americans speak English today... You wouldn't even be a citizen of the USA right now with the protection of the constitution if it weren't for those people. So if an English speaking country = an orange then this country is an orange even though there is no official language. The government, corporations and some people have the power to change this country but why should we change a nice delicious orange into a bad apple?

My dream would be to live in a world where everyone was at least bilingual meaning there is one second language that everyone speaks (something simple like Esperanto e.g.) and of course you could keep your first language and culture and sing Russian songs while dancing kalinka or put on Lederhosen and go to the Okoberfest or whatever is part of your local culture.

That one common international language would have to be a created language that isn't already any nation's national language because some people will inevitably be butthurt otherwise.

It would also make things easier in countries that already have several national languages. Switzerland for example has 4 national languages of which I only speak 2, the 3rd one only very basic and the 4th one not at all. If I meet people from these regions, we actually use English.
Having to learn more than two languages is a hassle for most people, so why not just have your first language and then learn the international world language at school. Result: No more Tower of Babel confusion with conversations consisting of a hodgepodge of 2 or 3 or even more languages. It can be fun but not when you need to get things done.

Imagine how much simpler traveling, business and socializing would become!

Our founding fathers were also slave owners.

Sounded pretty stupid didn't it? :D Now you know how your "not all of them" comment sounded. The difference is I was trying to sound ridiculous. :D

I am done with the conversation. if you want to talk about games or something let me know.

The ones that weren't, profited mightily from the slave trade.

And it's off with the rum and the Bibles
Take on the slaves, clink clink
Then hail and farewell to the smell
Of the African coast

Molasses to rum to slaves
'Tisn't morals, 'tis money that saves
Shall we dance to the sound
Of the profitable pound
In molasses and rum and slaves
...
Hail Boston, hail Charleston, who stinketh the most?
Quit pretending the Founding Fathers were morally upright and that their language has any moral legitimacy as a consequence. It won't wash.

"Hey George, I see you're keeping sentient beings as property. I've always been a little conflicted on that score."

"Yeah well everyone else is doing it, so whatever."

"Yeah, yeah I know... just saying."

"Well whatever, we've got bigger things to worry about like freedom for all men!"

This debate has nothing to do with morals. I brought up the founding fathers because they created this country so I thought their language deserves to be the language of the USA. It's a way of honoring them for their sacrifices and bravery. BUT now that I know they were all huge assholes who profited from slavery, I believe we should not honor them. Yes, you taught me something new about the founding fathers. The majority of Americans today speak English though so there is still 1 good reason why this country should be an English speaking country. If in the future, the majority of people here speak Spanish, then I'm okay with this country becoming a Spanish speaking country. I think it's good for everyone in a country to speak the same language. I don't even like the way English sounds. I think Spanish sounds 1000 times better.

All of this is bs.

One group of intolerants, attacking another group of intolerants, for being intolerant.

Do I really need to say you're all full of shit, or can you just hit the negative (-) button, on your own, for me having the audacity to bring this to your attention.

Grow up, and find a mirror to examine closely, before your politically correct, righteous, pogroms.
