DustFalcon1985: I know how to upgrade the PS3's HDD. But I was asking about the firmware in the SSD, not the PS3 per se.

you can only put your games on your internal hard drive. this was Sonys way of stopping people from sharing games, b/c their system allows you to use SSD & External Hard Drives. you can put movies, photos, & anything else on them, except games.

i switched out my internal for 1TB. its a very easy process. i have so much room for my games & have about 100 or more on there. since i am a Playstation Plus subscriber. i just update the new free games that they give you every week & put them on my system. you just have to buy a laptop hard drive. not a computer hard drive b/c they dont fit. you have to be careful though, with upgrading the speed that was originally on there, with an internal cause ive read that it can cause problems. i didnt, i just kept it the same & ive had no problems at all. make sure that the drive has the same specs for Bluray & your good. you can buy them for fairly cheap, especially when they go on sale. i think i bought mine through NewEgg. i got a Samsung. the best time to buy it would be Black Friday. i think that was when i bought mine. it was super cheap then. good luck

Death2Videodrome: just know that you cant put games from the Playstation Store, on it. SeaGate, SanDisk, or Intel are all good choices.

DustFalcon1985: Really? You can't play downloadable PSN Games on a PS3? Hope it doesn't cut my hopes of getting an SSD to speed up the loading time and getting rid of texture pop-ups in games.

Anyways. Before I put the SSD in my PS3. Do I have to update it's firmware and does the PS3 accept SATA III?

Crucial. It may not be the fastest drive out there, but in my opinion, it is the most reliable.

What I'm saying is you put the SSD *in* the PS3. Not use it as an external storage device.

it wont count if your using it to store games.
only if you get a new internal hard drive. the internal hard drive is the ONLY, way you can store games & game content.
i did heavy research on this b/c i wanted to upgrade my storage due to not having enough space for my games.
that is the only storage device that can hold games.
i wanted to put everything on an external hard drive cause it was easier, but i learned that you cant do it, nor can you put anything on an SSD or a thumb drive.
if you try, the feature is not available, its not something that you can click on.
it doesnt matter if you slide in an SSD or a thumb drive, its not the same b/c they can be carried to another PS3.
this was their way of preventing sharing from happening.
only the Wii can hold games on an SSD.
thats the only system that i know of that will let you hold games on it, that isnt an internal drive.
you're welcome to challenge me on this & see if they changed this in the past year.
but i dont see them changing this feature.
they did it this way on purpose.
if you google it, you will pull up tons of sites that will explain this to you.
the only way to do this is by buying a new Internal Hard Drive.
any other drive can only hold Pictures, Movies, or anything else but games & game related content.
its a very easy process.
it will take awhile to re-download everything that you use to have on your old Hard Drive but its very easy to install & to re-download your old items on it
you just go to downloads.
in your account area & it will have a full list of everything that you have downloaded in your system.
it saves it all in your account. nothing is lost.
you then go through that list, one by one & re-download everything onto your new hard drive.

Nirth: I've also read about that. I've a Intel 320 120GB SSD, bought about 2 years ago and still going strong. This particular model had an infamous 8MB bug that they released a firmware upgrade for but I never bothered with it because it didn't happen for me, still quite annoying but I keep a back up of my OS so not the end of the world.
But that bug isn't present in the latest models, right? I'll be entering the market again this year...

I think you are getting confused as to what an SSD is...

You can install an SSD as the internal hard disk in a PS3. Whether there's much to be gained in doing so appears to be debatable though:

Another vote for SanDisk here. I purchased a 2.5" SanDisk one for my laptop and it's wonderful. No glitches, no slowdown, fair temperatures, and great performance.

I've had both the Intel and Samsung drives. I will continue to use the samsung drives as they are great. I only have experience with the original Intel SSD, which was good, but the samsungs are just great pieces of tech. I wouldn't trust the OCZ SSD, as I read to many stories about their drives dying. Frankly if any SSD drive is only $10-20 cheaper than the same capacity Samsung, I will choose the Samsung everytime. The price difference would have to be overwhelming for me to choose another brand. Corsair and Crucial would probably be one of my second choices, but I would have to research them a little more thorougly before I purchase one.

Sure it will. It's slightly slower, its cells have a shorter lifetime (fewer rewrite cycles), and it has a little less storage space (due to using some as a reserve pool, to offset the shorter lifespan of the cells a bit).

Here's a review and comparison between the 256 GB 840 Pro and 250 GB 840.
