I'll tell you what is all about:

I'll tell you the whole story.

The Septuagint scholars mistranslated the Hebrew word for "young woman" into the Greek word for "virgin". It was an easy mistake to make because there was only a subtle difference in the spelling. So, they came up with a prophecy: "Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear us a son."

You understand? It was "virgin" that caught people's attention. It's not everyday a virgin conceives and bears a son. But leave that for a couple of hundred years to stew and next thing you know you have the Holy Catholic Church.

Edit: Wait, i think i fucked up, what was the question again?

VladP - if you own all the old games you like on CDs, and you aren't worried about those CDs degrading, then there is no significant reason to buy a new game on this site. However I doubt you own all the old games you would like (I challenge you for a list of your games), and I doubt that you still have all the old games you once played (games get lost, broken, lent and not returned).

So, by all means stay and talk with us about the games, buy none and just be a forum user. Most importantly, please post that list.

This.

Why should someone feel obligated in any way to buy something twice if they don't have to? That could constitute being financially stupid. I could see the convenience of not having to use 4 disks every time I wanted to install BG2 or UT2004, but it is money out the window that really is only justifiable by personal preference and situation. So I personally didn't re-buy those, but despite my extensive collection of classic PC titles I found I didn't own everything in the whole GOG world. I find it hard to believe the OP has everything he could ever want and couldn't find even 1 game in the 384 he doesn't have that is worth playing.

If he genuinely feels that way, then I would suggest that he is missing out somewhere, and ought to browse the catalog at random for a while. If nothing seems interesting at that point then I must think that gaming may not be a very serious interest at all.

VladP: I have a simple question. I own all the old games that I like on CDs. What could be the reason that I'd purchase games here?
I own them too, for me it's laziness. I get an install that's way more likely to work out of the box than my old disks.

Also, GOG is worth supporting, as an idea, to me.

That's pretty much the same to me. At first I felt pretty sure I will not rebuy any games from GOG that I already own on CD. But still, sometimes when there were sales of several games I already have, I rushed to find my original CDs just to test whether they work ok on Win7 (just to prove myself that I'd have no reason whatsoever to "re-buy" them).

But after I had wasted lots of time just to install a couple such games and hunt down the latest patches for them, I decided it doesn't make much sense try to save a couple of bucks for that much work. So, I've ended up rebuying quite a lot of games I have on CD already, mostly from promo sales.

But if I know the original game works ok in e.g. Win7, I know I have the relevant patches in a safe place, and maybe even know I can make a DRM-free digital copy of it (e.g. a 1:1 CD image)... then I don't really have a reason to buy it from GOG, even for a low promo prices.

Discover and purchase games that you may like and don't already have. I hardly believe that GOG is not able to provide pleasant surprises for you.

Downloading already patched games IS easier than using a disk, but that depends of what sort of connection you have (speed and traffic limits).

Digital downloads are the future. You are in the right place to start tasting the future. Especially during promos... :)

bazilisek: more-or-less guaranteed compatibility with Windows 7+ without major tweaking
*snort*
For me its all the old games I missed first time round and being introduced to he ones I hadn't even realised I had missed.

So far I have only bought 2 that I already owned:
- Total Annihilation - I never got around to getting the expansions so this was the easier route
- Syndicate - I had the Amiga version (still have an emulated Amiga tho' so its mostly laziness)

I think I had the free Lure of the Temptress on Amiga at one time too.

I don't see much advantage for you here. Why buying again something you alread have. Would be just a waste of money. The games do not play different here.

However, if a CD from your collection ever fails you could come here and buy the game again. :)
IF you own the CD's then you would not buy the games here. But if you know some one that does not own the CD's, and wants to play the games you have too, then buying them from GoG may be their only option.
I've only bought games I don't own, except for the one or two exceptions. If nothing in the catalog interests you that you don't already own, move on. It's a store after all.
What I really like with GOG games, is that I can download my games anywhere, the hassle-free installation and that I don't need to carry CDs and other stuff with me.
