It used to bother me that I live hundreds of miles from a 3D theatre but I'm beginning to think I might be lucky, not having to worry about forking over a lot of extra cash for something that is 'gimmiky' at best.

langurmonkey: The problem is there needs to be more Aliens style movies but so far, since Alien 3, no such movie has been made.

... which was unceremoniously franchised and screwed once it became a hit.
I don't want to be a whiner but if they make another movie like Alien 3 I'm going to kill myself. That movie was so bad it reached out of the screen and slapped you around simply because you were watching it. Alien 4 was much better though obviously not up to 1 or 2.

"The Thing" prequel was WAY better than I thought it would be because despite being CGI it still stayed true to the creature look. That and it fit perfectly into the "sequel" to the point that you could just splice the two together and it would be seamless. The problem is that really isn't an 'alien' movie but rather a strait up horror film. Shit all I'm doing now is confusing myself. :P

Alien: A horror movie in space with an alien you can't get away from.
John Carpenter's The Thing: A horror movie at an arctic base you can't get away from.

Close, enough, I think.

If you spliced the two Thing movies together, I'd think everyone would wonder why the movie didn't get really good until the second half. :)
I went to see it with my brother a few nights ago. It's the first time I've been to a real movie theatre in five years. My early impression was: Whoa. I can see why these films cost so much to produce. Every scene seems as if a million bucks were poured into it. I enjoyed the film.

We both have mechanical backgrounds, and are not-quite-telepathic in the way that brothers often are. On the drive home he complained that I had been too critical of some of the physics, though I hadn't said a word during the film. He was right, though.

Agree or disagree that is still a great line, very nice. XD

shadowknight2814: Pitch Black?
No. The movie has Riddick. Riddick is too bad ass for the stupid aliens in that movie. There was no doubt in my mind of Riddick surviving. One of the things that makes the Aliens movies special is none of the characters are bad ass killing machines and they have to face bad ass killing machines(the Xenomorph). The characters are just normal men and women in the Aliens movies. The Marines in Aliens appeared to be bad ass but the movie quickly shows you, Marines are not bad ass if they have a shitty officer who gets 75% of them killed and are up against the Xenomorph. Sure, the Marines weren't normal men and women but they still, were very human compared to Riddick. Riddick is like a Xenomorph.

Actually, the original intention of the writers was to kill Riddick, and have the female pilot survive. They changed it at the last minute as they thought he had more sequel potential. Also, Riddick was not an unstoppable badass in that movie, he was strong, and a serial killer, but he still got messed up a couple of times in the movie.

He was more than just a strong serial killer in the movie even if he got messed up a few times. The movie shows you, his unnatural stealth, his super intelligence, how disciplined he his on top being strong and a serial killer. If the movie didn't have Riddick in it, it would be an Aliens type movie. Later, they use the same character Riddick, and make him defeat the Necromongers. A man who can defeat an Empire of warriors who do not fear death is not your average serial killer. If there was just one serial killer like Riddick out there, I doubt the Police would leave their Police stations.

kalirion: Pacific Rim never meant to be an Aliens style horror movie. It's Godzilla meets Independence Day, or something like that, but done well.

Aver: And where I said that it supposed to be like Aliens? I just said that there are way too many SF movies like that in comparison to serious ones that I prefer.
Agreed, Aver is not against the SF movies for younger audiences here, but against the lack of SF movies for 'older' audience. Stop making uncalled sarcastic comments.

I long to ever see something with the 'Aliens' vibe, there was Event Horizon at some point .... but for the sake of not spoiling I won't say why it's still really far from 'Aliens'.

I know someday a trilogy (or pentalogy or even more) will be made out of 'The caves of steel', but so far it doesn't seem that able people are willing to 'retry' the I-robot (epicly failed) experiment. I don't feel like in a hurry because I think it needs to be done by 'new minds' for it to be good.

Watch the sequel and play the video games. EVERYONE in that universe is nastier than Riddick, even the cops are borderline criminals. Anyway, PB is close-enough for an aliens-type movie.

The aliens in PB are not as deadly as the aliens in the Aliens movies. The aliens in PB are very animal like while the aliens in the Aliens universe are 100% pure killing machines. And almost everyone in Riddick's universe are nasty criminals like you said but they are still not as bad ass as Riddick. Whenever people from his universe encounter Riddick, who wins? So due to Riddick and the aliens in PB being not as deadly as the Xenomorph, PB doesn't take the audience to the same place Aliens movies take the audience to. So PB is different from the Aliens type movies.

They're aliens that want to kill everyhing. Close enough.
