I hate street fighter with a passion :P, never liked the stupid circular motions required for specials which I find far too unreliable to pull off, even with a Hori arcade umm block (American square joystick ¬_¬). Plus it's not that great a show of graphics, the PSP has done similar for years with games like Tekken Dark Resurrection and Soul Calibur (& not the same genre but Kingdom Hearts & Final Fantasy Crisis Core look incredible).
I do however like BlazBlue. As for the NGP, no I don't as it has full controls too and I'm in no rush to get one (I'm no Sony fanboy.) My PSP still has lots of life in it with some of the great PSone rpgs etc.

I do hate this whole touch screen fad though, I don't see any advantages to it; all you end up with is a smudged screen (INCREDIBLY annoying when gaming) or a pen you keep losing.


As a side musing; I am thinking that Nintendos next portable will feature 3 horizontally folding fairly low res screens, 1 vertically folding screen that basically makes a little house around your head, smell-o-vision, 3D and if we're very lucky, graphics that are only last Gen.

I think they advertise to kids because kids are easy marks. Since kids can easily be manipulated and parents frequently have a hard time saying no.

Yes and no. The 'normal' games are playable in 2D but it is easier to judge depth in 3D. It is sort of like playing a typical game on a better computer. You get more fps and higher res, but it is still the same game. So it is mostly a nice graphical effect in the same way that 3D video cards provided a nice graphical effect when they were introduced or when sound cards were introduced. The games didn't really change, but what could be done well within a game changed. In the end though, the UI is still the same, it is the display that is revolutionary.

I'd expect the same sort of development, initially just 'pretty stuff' then games that don't really work well without a 3D screen. In any case, I highly doubt I'll ever choose a 2D version of a game over a 3D version.

The AR 'games/tech demos' are made for 3D so they are pretty much 3D or bust.

There are good games on all systems and using all UIs. Religious hatred of any of them is naive. Being 'too cool for school' is a waste but everybody has to learn that for themselves. Such is life.

I beleive you, someone said something earlier that made me think it didn't (like there was no DS emulator or something). I don't know why you'd need a DS emulator, because I thought it played DS games, apparently it does. I about laughed my ass off thinking it didn't though:)

I don't think it's emulation, I'm pretty sure it's hardware support (like the Wii and GC). The 3DS screen is a higher resolution than the one on the DS though so you're given both of the possible options. The default is scaling, which doesn't look terrible but if you hold Start and Select when booting the DS game you get a lovely and sharp bordered picture. The new screens are effectively 320x240 when showing a 4:3 picture while the old screens were 256x192 to give you an idea of how big the border is.

Yeah, I'm sure my original understanding was correct (and is in line with what you're saying) I just boggled for a moment when I thought someone said DS emulation or that it might not even do that.

Anyway, my real criticisms hold true, plus the jury is out whether it's bad for your eyes or childhood brain development or not. The only thing that irks me about the DS Lite is the lack of WPA support in the wireless, otherwise I consider it superior to any other incarnation of the DS.

Tried it at Target where they had it with a demo of Pilotwings. My eyes hurt within 5 seconds of staring at it. After I adjusted, I was able to view it fine, but after, my eyes hurt like hell again, and continued to for the next hour.

And I'm waiting on the PSP2/NGP. Honestly, Nintendo caters to casuals and kids, and gives just enough to the "core" market to get them to buy the console then thins out the releases. Think I'm wrong? Prove it. Go back and look at the games for Nintendo consoles starting with the N64, and see how many mature-focused titles there are. Teen games can be fun, but they don't target the older generation 90% of the time.

Also, let's look at some of the key franchises the competitors have: Sony has Killzone and Uncharted. Microsoft has (had) Halo and Gears of War. Nintendo has....Pokemon, Mario, Zelda...well, everything rehashed from 1985, and after the colossal fuckup that was Metroid: Other M, I doubt there are many people hopeful for a new Metroid game, and that was arguably where the core gamers were strongest.

Edit: Also, why bother getting a 3DS right now? This is Nintendo. Within a year and a half you will see a 3DS SP or 3DS Lite come out and all the games you want now will be at discounted $10-20 prices then.

I'm waiting for NGP, to be honest. 3D still seems like a massive gimmick to me and I'd rather have kickass "2D" visuals than half-baked 3D on a small screen.

I'd pass on the NGP and just wait a few months for the NGPC. There will be more games made for it, and the graphics will be 2D and in color, not just shades of red and gimmicky 3D! This'll give Nintendo a run for their money!

Oh... 'Next Generation Portable'. I thought I might have finally hit a time warp, this conversation just seemed awfully familiar...

The funny thing is as far as portables go there's nothing wrong with current gen. Fancy phones still fill the niche they can't. Seriously, I haven't compared the two but I'll bet my EVO kicks the crap out of the 3DS. Well yeah, you say, but it costs 600 bucks! Well, if it didn't need the phone parts, the WiMax chip, 2 cameras, and all that other jazz it wouldn't.

EDIT: I forgive anything portable for crappy small screens, due to battery life (which the 3DS does crappy at, I guess), but I am sick of HDTVs and LCD panel monitors with more horrid resolutions than I had years ago. Where's my DPI? We should be looking at 600 DPI now and we aren't. It's the same, shitty tech they crapped out years ago. HDTVs were a step backwards. /end-unrelated-rant
