I played to Dragon Age: Origins to the end because it was supposed to be the new Baldur's Gate 2 but the only good parts were the music and the gameplay in my opinion. The story and characters were so generic, uninspiring, "cliché" and boring imho. And the graphics too were generic.

And now I finished The Witcher 2 and I felt that the only good parts were the graphics and the music, with the gameplay being alright (it's nice to have some difficulty) and the story and characters being also very weak.

I am the only one who is so much dissatisfied with the story of recent RPGs? Or did I miss the new RPGs with the best stories? Do you have any recommendations?

Spiderweb Software is all I got for you (and maybe Gothic if you haven't played it), Jeff Vogel is known for his excellent storytelling (and shitty graphics).

And does their last game, Avadon: The Black Fortress, has a story at least 1/4 as good as Planescape: Torment? Or which one would you recommend first?

The classic CRPG seems to be dead mostly thanks to the biggest CRPG developer BioWare calling the genre unprofitable. Indies are out there but if you are looking for something mainstream then you will be disappointed.

I have not yet picked up Avadon, but it sounds really good (he actually updated his engine for it). If I were you I'd pick of the first compilation of Avernum (first 3 games I think). He provides extremely long demos, so don't be shy about trying them out. Even if you order physical disks he'll still email you a key to unlock your demo copy if you want to keep playing right away. Seriously, this guy is a good person, if you like his games I encourage you to buy some.

Avadon is Jeff Vogel's attempt to broaden the game's appeal by stremalining it, so I wouldn't recommend it to you, no.

Personally, as a fellow lover of old RPGs (though I loved Dragon Age too) I'd recommend the Geneforge series.
You should probably start with 5 since it has the best gameplay and graphics and only go back to the first ones if you really like the game.

There is also the Eschalon games from Basilisk, though that's probably less your style.

You aren't going to find many true modern RPGs... well... none, quite frankly, unless it is an indie title. What you will see are a bunch of hybrids like DAO, FO3/NV, Witcher series, etc.

To be fair, some of these are good games (though I don't really want to have sex with NV like Delixe:) I can see why one wouldn't put them in the same category of some of the classic RPGs, though.

Thank you, I will try them! At least, what's nice about indie games, it's there's less expectations, so less deception. One of the problems with games like Dragon Age and The Witcher 2 is the hype.

Huh? How can you consider DA: O or The Witcher to be hybrids?
I can understand if you don't like them but in no way are they "hybrids". What would they be hybrids of anyway?

He generally won't read his own forums, but he's said he's really happy when people enjoy his games, selling 5k units used to be a decent run for him (I'd expect Avadon was more due to his recent press).

I very much enjoyed the Eschalon series (third game is in the works), although I have yet to pick up any of Spiderweb's games (keep meaning to do so, but have such a backlog right now). Keep an eye out for Age of Decadence by Iron Tower as well. It looks like it will be very good and hopefully will release around the end of the year.

Yes Age of Decadence looks very promising, although it's much closer to Fallout (the first two, not the recent ones) and Arcanum than to BG.
