Actually, we are not as much as you think. We are considered the "most honorable brokers" by arab and israely officials due to our "special history". While we give Israel the occasional little favor here and there (*cough*submarines*cough*) we are pretty much equally protective about each of the executed minorities. Our "special relations" with Israel and oru jewish population tends to draw more focus, because, well, they always do.

The main thing on my mind when writing that was how certain words and images are illegal in Germany.

It says bad things about Microsoft, sure. But I don't think it's a racial thing. Look at that list from the standpoint of economy and respect for copyright and the list of notable absences decreases significantly.

Do you know how many times this (and similar stuff) pops up for me and lots of other people all over the world? It's not even funny anymore.

We have illegal signs, but not words. This oes more in the vein of "state protection" than minority protection. If you show the swatzika flag you are denouncing the german state (among other things). I think "flag burning" would be the equvialent in the US (Is that actually illegal?).

The denial of the holocaust (or rather all of the crimes done during that time) is illegal and that is highly, highly, highly controversial within the legal community. In a nutshell, we have a conflict between the freedom of speech and the dignity of the victims of that crime. And in the german constituion, human dignity reigns above all. Literally and legally. This is why the impairment of the freedom of speech is allowed by the constitution.

Microsoft just recently opened up Xbox Live for Poland (a year or so ago) so this is not really surprising.

I don't believe it's for that kind of reasons. Could be because of local legal provisions, agreements with local internet providers, ability to enforce whatever silly concept or policy they built in that crap system of theirs, but if it was some sort of supremacist plot, some countries that are on the list wouldn't be there.

Anyway, the only sound reaction in front of GFWL is to boycott it.

This is a longstanding sore point. Microsoft Israel promised access to Live all the way back in 2006. It has never happened. Nobody is offering any kind of explanation.

Whatever the reason, it's commercially brain-dead. Israel is, per capita, the biggest Internet consumer in the world. There is no monopoly, censorship, or other regulation that would impede the operation of Live. Microsoft has a huge R&D facility in Israel, so it's not like the company could possibly be ignorant of the commercial and Internet conditions in the country.
