I haven't played Don't Starve, but I wonder which is worse, a game without a plot or structure or a game with a plot and structure that you have little to no ability to decipher or comprehend on your own?

I was talking with friends the other day and the topic of old Atari 2600 games came up and we started talking about some of the really bad ones. Some of the mentioned ones included Pac-man and E.T., but the one that immediately came to my mind was Raiders of the Lost Ark. That game had a plot and structure, but good luck figuring any of it out on your own. I pulled up a youtube video to relive my memories and wow! Can you imagine buying a new game for $40-50, getting it home, and trying to figure out that convoluted mess?

I might have to check out Don't Starve this weekend and see how that changes my perspective on ROTLA...

mqstout: The money was wasted the moment they became "Steam credits", not when they were later used to rent something.

babark: He said he got it from selling steam trading cards, so you're saying the potential money of the cards were wasted on becoming steam credits?
What else would he had done with the cards?
Good Point! He could have bought more cards from his trading card money instead of a game but wouldn't that be kinda... pointless? :D
Thats what you get for buying into a game that is clearly all hype and no substance.
I like Don't Starve but I have to be in a very specific kind of mood to play it. The same kind of mood I need to be in when I play Minecraft or Dwarf Fortress. It's nice and relaxing to build camps and then wander and explore, then manage to make it back to one of them and see all the stuff you've already done is still there. Yes there is very little plot to run with, the flip side of that is you can make the story whatever you like. I've done both false journal logging (eh, can you call it fanfic if no-one else reads it?) and comics to add narrative and structure to games like that, if the lack of story fails to hold my interest. One of my favorites was pretending to be a stranded amateur zoologist in Minecraft. On the other hand I can completely see how a person could be very frustrated with it. Don't know what to say other than; I hope your future games bring you more enjoyment.
Strange thing: I discovered that PS4 version contain an "opening".

It starts as soon as you hit "New game", on PC there is none.

Maybe they added some story elements on PS4 versione? Because it's called "Console Edition" or something like that.
I just bought that Urban Trial Freestyle game for 99 cents and wasted 3-4 hours trying to make it run. It crashes at startup and google hasn't been helpful...

hehe yeah I guess it could have been a lot worse

Punished_Snake: And even the Steam version comes with a DRM free copy, redeemable at HumbleStore.
Thank you for pointing that out! I had no idea. I was regretting buying it on steam when it came to the Humble store and GOG. I even checked if it was actually using steam's DRM - I mean if they are going to sell it DRM free, surely they didn't actually use steam's DRM. They did. At least, on Linux they did.

Now I can uninstall the steam version, and happily install the Humble version!
I have found it is a game best played in small increments. Like an hour or two max or you'll go insane. I like that you are just thrown into it not knowing anything, and dying gives you experience. The hardcore aspect of it is aggravating at times, but that's how you learn.
Oh and when you start loosing your sanity... lol

Nah, its just a useless subtitle its still the same game but optimized for the PS4 controller. I thought you had a PS4 with a PS+ subscription then you would have gotten this game free in January. Do not buy it again on PS4 in hopes of it being any different in terms of adventure mode or story because it is the same.

Eh, ymmv. Personally, I can play for hours on end. Usually, I won't stop playing either until I have to go do something (eat, sleep, etc) or until I die. That said, I know it's a niche game, and I won't recommend it to people unless I have reason to believe they'd enjoy it.

oh normally I am the same way about playing games (so not healthy :) ), I just found I enjoyed this particular game more when I approached it this way, it was just my opinion.
I agree it is totally a niche game and was surprised by how much hype it had when I actually started playing it.

F1ach: Just spoke to my son (11), apparently he got it on a Humble Bundle and he says its not that hard at all....*shrugs*...
My son gave me a beta key last year - not sure why since he knows I don't do "really hard" games well at all. I keep dying but periodically pick it up and die another day ;-p Frankly I would have loved if they'd added an easy mode for less hard-core gamers like me cause I adore the graphics and while I don't mind a fairly steep learning curve - it's just way too steep for me.

Yeah I got interested myself cos of this thread and checked it out and the steam forums put me off getting it. There was a thread saying why you should buy the game and somebody made a post about why you shouldn't and that made more sense to me after reading it. Apparently the devs got annoyed when people figured out a way to save and stopped it, apparently there are mods to make it easier, but when new update is released, it buggers the mods up.

But I got the impression that the devs are not particularly customer focused and want you to play it their way or not at all.

Life is too short to play a frustrating game, if you play them just to relax,

Dunno what they would have done with my three quid, maybe bought a packet of biscuits, I guess they wont have that pleasure now. :)
