Thought I'd point out this sweet looking unofficial remake that is in the works of the classic cyberpunk masterpiece Snatcher.
It is apparently being made on the Crysis engine.
The screens and vids are breathtaking.
Check it out if you dig cyberpunk and neons.
I'm sure excited for it.

From moddb page:

"In 2047 : You are an amnesiac detective trying to uncover your past and the mystery behind the robotic killing machines who steal their victims identities know as Snatchers. "SNATCHER" is a "Stand Alone" game on the CryEngine 3. The goal is to faithfully re-create Hideo Kojima's cyberpunk classic "SNATCHER" in a fully explorable 3D environment!"

I hope they're allowed to see this through to completion, it looks great. I'd love to see the old Sega CD or even the MSX2 versions again as well.
I've been following this for years now. I hope the guy never loses the will to complete this. I don't know if it'll be completed. If it does, it might be over a decade at this rate.

Dream scenario is Hideo Kojima, who's toyed with the idea of a current-gen open-world Snatcher, sees it, and just hurls resources at him or hire him to help him make it.
Snatcher and Policenauts: two unknown gems from Kojima. Dammit, i'd like at least a HD remake for those two.
Nope, doesn't work for me, I didn't see anything that I would have deemed an improvement over the original art. It could be useful to new generations of gamers, though, whose minds have trouble processing low-res graphics.

He's not updating the art. He's REMAKING THE ENTIRE GAME INTO A 3D OPEN-WORLD GAME. Dramatic excited caps.

When I said "art," I didn't mean "graphic resources" but rather the whole interactive visual experience that is the game.

Don't get me wrong, I believe there is a lot of potential in creating a 3D open-world game in the Snatcher universe. I only have doubts that a "faithful remake" of the original game could work as one. Especially if "work" means "surpass the original game experience." :)

This. I think it'll be much more comparable to something akin to the RPG, where it was the same story but much different at the same time.

I was much more excited when I thought it was just an HD remake. I'm still excited but a little less so and a little more cautious due to the fact that he's trying to translate it into a 3D open-world setting. I'm a bit worried it'll be focused too much on the action and that the world won't be developed well, possibly with a lot of conflicting sections, due to the fact that we only got a limited view of it in the original Snatcher.
Meh. I doubt it will ever get finished. Looks like another typical overly ambitious project by people who aren't aware of the effort it takes to create such a game. I'll gladly be proven wrong but I won't hold my breath.

So... people want just a graphical update rather than something different? Even though Snatcher's graphics (the Mega CD version anyway) was hand-drawn and pristine anyway? Why not just play the original Snatcher if you just want that?

No wonder imagination in games is going down the shitter.

Re-imagining a classic, revered game almost always ends in the game losing the soul or feel of the original. That's why no one wants it.

I would be more than happy to welcome a game like this in Snatcher's world or maybe even just a world based on Snatcher but the fact that they are remaking the exact Snatcher game and storyline in a different type of game worries me. Especially since it's a "3D open-world game." Makes me really worried that they'll change the focus from the investigations and puzzles to action that wasn't quite as present in the original.

Even if that did happen, the game can't lose its soul as it still exists and is playable physically or via emulation. No one's missing out.

Exactly, I think there's this real problem with any sort of remake that people think it'll destroy the original. The original will always be there. Remember when everyone worried about X-Com?

I'm not worried about it in the context of the original. I'm worried about it in the context of this remake. Worried that they won't get it right. Nothing wrong with that.
