Ranbir: I'm hoping for the graphic novel, gurps in addition to the typical stuff.
Extremely hopeful! :D
amcdermo: They also made 3 novels which I would LOVE to have as a download.
The graphic novel would be nice. ("Power of the Mind Worms") I've often thought of buying it second-hand on Amazon, where second-hand copies can still be had fairly cheaply.
I was a very active member in the SMAC community on the Civilization forum "Apolyton" for a dog's age. I was a fanatic of this game from the time of its release for years afterward. I actually bought the trilogy adaptation of novels derived from the game during the height of my investment. They were all written by Michael Ely, the same gent who wrote the pre-release episodic short story teaser "Journey to Centauri," by-the-by, which was very popular for those of us eagerly awaiting the game's release on those old Firaxis forums in those days, and greatly fleshed out the U.N.S. Unity personalities. The trilogy of novels themselves (Starting with "Centauri Dawn") were quite decent, especially graded on the low-expectation curve of video game novelizations. Apparently the later two ("Dragon Sun" & "Twilight of the Mind") are being hawked for exorbitant, college textbook-esque sums on Amazon, so I'm glad I bought them when I did.
Now, the additions alone in SMAX don't enhance SMAC in a meaningful way, in my opinion. The alien progenitor races were sort of boorish, like a bad Star Trek Voyager monster-race-of-the-week, fit only to be nerve gassed once you obtained the appropriate tech. They got in the way from the balance of ethos, ideology, diplomacy and power of seven human factions. And the new factions sort of have a tenuous basis in reality; most of them seemed like at best they'd be underground communities existing in the context of the larger original factions. You have the "Hacker Nation" led by Sinder Roze (I imagine them an underground org in the Morganites), the Cyborgs (underground of Zakarov's the University), the Free Drones (The Hive or the Believers), and the Cult of Planet (Gaian Eco-terrorists and mystics). Interesting concepts, but I don't see any of them really having the stability to comprise a faction unto themselves. The lone exception are the water-based Nautilus Pirates, who I could see a case being made for. The new tech and special abilities in SMAX are interesting, though none of them necessary to the spirit of the original game.
However, I *do* hope GOG add the expansion because of the compatibility with various mods and additions out there, most of which assume you have SMAX (sort of like mods for BG2 these days assume Throne of Bhaal on the user's PC as well). This includes my own "Re-Balancing" Mod for SMAC/X, where I tinker with various subtle things in the game; faction abilities, tech, facility/unit placement, terraforming, cost of certain Special Projects (like old Civ2 "wonders"), which hopefully I can share here on GOG if and when SMAC arrives.
Ranbir: Well SMAC is worth it, even if it doesn't have Crossfire from the get go.
That is of course a testament to the completeness the game has and how it is, in my opinion, the greatest turn-based strategy science fiction game -ever-. It has a great look, great dialogues, great story (cleverly teased into the sandbox), great acting, great design, great authenticity about the world it wants us to believe in.
I still play the occasional PBEM for it.
WhiteElk: I've watched some "Let's Play" videos and can't wait to see this for myself. I'm impressed by the quality of the voice acting and the stories they tell. And more.
PBEM also interests me. But as I understand it, PBEM is only available with Crossfire?
No, I've done PBEM with both SMAC vanilla and SMAX.
