I haven't got the game yet, but it is never a bad idea to check out the top mods on nexus (skyrimnexus.com). There is even stuff that might help with performance: TESV Acceleration Layer http://skyrimnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=4387

Try asking in the officials.

Also there is The Holds Of Skyrim, it's a new Mod hosting site. Made by Fliggerty (see Great House Fliggerty). That is all assuming your a fan of the series.

Try Planet Elder Scrolls for almost every mod for any of the TES games.

Also, the Creation Kit hasn't been released yet so mods are being made using the GECK (Fallout CK) sooooo it isn't fully functional.

For most people it depends on which game you play first in the series. But I highly recommend Morrowind. Oblivion was fun for Role Playing but the story was repetitive and a bit boring. Morrowind didn't have Voice acting so the dialogue was 1000x more in depth and the story prospered from that.

The graphics aren't as good as Oblivion or Skyrim (obviously) but look into Morrowind Graphics and Sound Overhaul it makes it look better then Skyrim in most cases.

You don't have to. Story isn't exactly bethesda's strong point, although they DO make good lore - which is in the books in the game anyway.

I have the opinion that morrowind is better than skyrim, but skyrim is still very well done imo.

I would also wait for bethesda to get off their lazy ass and release their creation kit before using any advanced mods, although those that modify character faces are probably ok.

This, and Morrowind was truly unique in setting. I would also say that Morrowind has aged rather well, better than Oblivion, imo. Oblivions strong points on release were the graphics and the general atmosphere, but that is nowadays considered "normal". For a gamer from the 80s or 90s coming out of that sewer was simply breathtaking. But once the "wow effect" (or honeymoon phase, as I like to call it) is over, Morrowind remains a solid and fascinating game. Oblivion just feels generic...

Luckily, you can pimp Oblivion with mods until there's not much left of the original feeling ;) (or even go for total conversions like Nehrim)

Back to Skyrim: I mentioned the Acceleration Layer mod before, and now I accidentally found this: http://alexander.sannybuilder.com/?category=other&altname=skyrim_boost
Seems to be based on the Acceleration Layer, maybe it gives an even greater FPS boost. May still be WIP, though. I'll just wait until the Creation Kit is available and a bunch of absolutely awesome mods appears, then grab Skyrim at a sale and hopefully have a blast playing it with those mods...

Skyrim: No need to mod it out of the gate IMO, the game is excellent. Just play the dang thing.

Morrowind: It's my favorite game of all time, but I still think people should stop telling others to play it in every TES thread. It's very much a product of its time. If you reallllly like games of that time (which you might considering the site we're on) then you should play it first... if not, just play Skyrim and enjoy.

As someone who has absolutely fallen in love with Morrowind despite its numerous flaws (and hasn't played any of the other TES games besides about 15 minutes of Daggerfall) , I'd like to hear more about this. What do you think are the weak/strong points of the other games? In what ways are they different than Morrowind?

Drop that one - fast. Yes it was one of the first ones available but.... for the health of your eyes, pick Calientes Female Body Mod Big Bottom Edition -CBBE- instead.

Right now? I'd say go without mods first. The only one worth considering would be a UI mod, like or [url=http://www.skyrimnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=667]QD Inventory.

The thing is, the creation kit is supposed to show up in January and the modding will then start to really kick off. Besides, there's nothing wrong playing Skyrim without mods.
