Did democracies stop fearing the voter?! this is ridiculous, SOPA And PIPA get shelved but we still have the looming threat of ACTA - an act which hasn't even been explained to the main public, who all enjoy services such as facebook, youtube and twitter. Point is case: modern democracy isn't democracy.

It's still a democracy. The issue is that it's one that allows for lobbying, and corporate self-interest at the expense of consumers. I guess as for since when.... I guess ever since there have been major industry lobbyists, which would be at least 70 years.

Also, what in the world is ACTA? Nobody I talk to regularly has ever brought that up.

Think of ACTA as NAFTA but online, and across a bunch of countries (and the EU). Like NAFTA the idea is to bring certain domestic laws to an arbitrary standard that publicly appears to be agreed upon by all the countries, but in reality is something the US is shoveling down the throats of governments. Nobody really knows what's in it, but then again nobody really knows what's in Twinkie bars and people lap that shit up.

I believe that would be defined as corpocracy... or something similar. Ruled by corporations rather than the people. And yes, this seems - to me - to be what our "democracy" has become.

Yeah, I'm just amused when US citizen doesn't know what ACTA is when US gov (and other countries) already signed it. and the whole world that hasn't signed it yet is opposing ;)

From what i know,. Australia has signed it already... HOWEVER, That dosen't mean they can't retract from the bill! What is needed is numbers and an attitude to set things right. The only reason most people dont know is because it's been hidden from them..

I say, get all the support we can, push ACTA out of countries that dont have it yet, then push it out of the one's that do.
