Silverfall was released about 4 years ago when I bought it, it was probabbly the toughest RPG I had ever played, the enemies were so close together, it was hard to fight without aggroing more bunches of enemies as you fought the original bunch, ending up with you getting swarmed and dying.

I saw it on Steam (*spits) for €4 for it and it's expansion together, did a bit of checking, to find that it had been patched and was now a pretty decent game.

So, rather than hit the attic, I got it on Steam (*spits). I was expecting a 20 gig d/l, but infact, the first game is about 14 gigs and the expansion was about 300 mb.

Anyway, the combat has improved significantly, with easily manageable enemies and really cool spell effects. eg. you can freeze and enemy or lay down an AoE frost spell to freeze a bunch of them and lay into them with other types of spells, like lightning/fire etc. Also there is a slight auto-target system, which can be cycled through with TAB, which helps enormously when dealing with multiple foes. TBH, when I fired it up and hit the swamp, I thought it was still the same, but by level 2, I was easily able to deal with anything.

As you level up, you increase your stats and buy skills that are placed on a skillbar, you will auto attack with a click on an enemy, then you can click on the tool bar skills to use them as required.

You can also aquire companions (2 at a time), to help in your questing, Initially you meet a healer and then after about an hour, you will meet a melee character, but these are just the first of many, you can swap them out as required and pick them up again in the nearest village if you need them again. You can also build up relationships with them via dialogue, to open up their stoy/questline.

Factions are represented kinda like Arcanum, insofar as you have Magic and Technology, the more quests you do for one, increases your standing with that faction. It will also decide if you will eg. use magic, bow or a rifle for ranged combat.

The graphics are great, I played it at release on a low end machine and while playable, it only looked "ok", but seeing them now and a modern PC, they look great, with excellent water reflections and spell effects.

The camera is very managable, you can zoom out and in with the mousewheel and you can rotate it by clicking the mousewheel and turning the mouse.

All in all, I'm really impressed with what they have done with the game, I still have the original, but I would easily pay 20 bucks for this package and feel well satisified.

Hard?
That game was ungodly easy! I destroyed it without even trying, and that was years ago, prior to Earth's Awakening releasing.

Good game though, if horribly balanced and bland story.
Thank you very much for this post. I'd been considering it, but there's so little information on the game out there that I was holding off.

The only concern I have is the download size. Ten gigs is a major investment for me time wise. Seems kind of absurdly high for a game of this style.

Well, it is a good looking game tbh.

@Zolgar, maybe I just sucked when I played it before, now I suck less at it, I dunno, its been 4 years, all I remember was getting swamped. ymmv.
At the time Titan Quest was in the near vicinity when Silverfall was released if my mind serves me right. I still have the disc version of the game but none of my drives have ever been able to read the disc correctly on startup for some bizarre reason, should have took it back when I got it on day of release! Managed to get it installed eventually back then and had to use a nocd to be able to actually play it

I got the Gold Edition from Gamersgate a few month back when it was on sale and have been gradually playing through it. I find it a little tough when you just start out in the swamp but you level pretty quickly and become a bit over powerful by the time you reach the desert and can one hit a lot of the enemies.

Its a fine game though, its literally fun and the visual art direction is fitting for the game. Shame it didn't get the recognition it deserved at the time, literally a bit of a hidden gem. It would be cool seeing it land here at GOG one day.
Thanks for sharing this with us...

maybe we can see this game on GOG sometime in the future...

Also, did you play tech or nature, and melee or ranged?

As I recall, I was playing a ogre, tech, melee master.. which might also just be the 'easy' button.

Elf/ Mage/Nature mate, but it could just as easily be that I sucked :)

Yes it is, once installed when you run it first time copy and paste the key into the activation box and away you go done.

I had to use the Earth Awakening key to activate, wouldn't accept the standard Silverfall key but with the key I used I have full access to both Silverfall and the expansion.

Nice thanks for the reply
I bought the complete pack based off this thread.

This is what we need more of around here. I'd never even heard of this game before this sale. So many games fall through the cracks these days.

Heal Morka quest will allow you to have Morka as a healer companion, also, on the way to the elf village, you will meet a guy called Danseleme, he will join you if you complete his quest to find someone a little further away.

There was a quest to find the Lost Survivors, while I did find them, they would not talk to me, dunno why, so I just left them there.

Patched when? Just now now, or you didn't notice until now that it has received a patch at some point?

Just asking because I've bought it (and the expansion) from some DotEmu promo before, so I guess I'll be checking if they have updated it too.

(which also means I don't see why they couldn't appear on GOG too)
