anjohl: I think I am beginning to understand the problems many of you said you had wiht New Vegas, in terms of the game being largely a central hub as opposed to a large world, lacking the post apocalyptic feel, and having bad writing.

- Light/Mild Spoilers Ahead -

I just finished my first expansion, Dead Money, which had a lot to like (LOVED DOG/GOD, Christine, and Dean!) and decided to do some main quest. I had intended to visit Caesar peacefully, but for some reason, everytime I went into the inside camp, I was attacked. Being significantly stronger than I was before, I went in and slaughtered the whole bunch, Caesar included. It wasn't easy, but I got it done. I got the chip, killed Benny, and then I hit my first problem.

I have no idea how to proceed. Siding with Mr. House seems to destroy my good reputation with the NCR (and I have read perhaps the Brotherhood), siding with Yes Man seems suspicious, as he uploads himself into the mainframe. Can you side with the NCR? What does that entail, killing House? It seems like Side Bets and House Always Wins are diametrically opposed, but how do you proceed with the NCR? I am a mainly good character, and have somewhat cooperated with House, done a lot with the NCR, Boomers, and Brotherhood.

In FO3, I always could roleplay my way forward, but the writing in this game doesn't make things as clear. That might be by design, but damn is it frustrating!

I have saved just before critical choices and tried out some of the options, but I really want to proceed down the story path now. Any advice?
Okay, sorry for skipping every post after OP but this irked me!
You are complaining about your actions having consequences! You killed Caesar and now you have to make a choice, your choice WILL get people to like you and/or hate you. You will have to *gasp!* live with it. That's what a fucking RPG with choices& consequences is all about.

Of course with FO3 thin kind of thing was easier! it was always holding your hand, and giving you clear-cut choices between being good or evil (well, except for some two occasions), but most people would consider that NV is the one letting you roleplay.

You get props for loving Dead Money, though.

Gazoinks: I'm planning on doing this soon with my current character using the Rail Cannon from Project Nevada (it is awesome). :D

Just went on my own Legionary murder spree to take out Caesar. Here's me on his throne wearing Benny's Suit and a Hat (it's not my combat outfit, but I thought it was fitting for symbolizing the Indie faction).

Nice, what did you kill him with?

Rail Cannon (Project Nevada weapon). I was hoping he'd engage me in dialog first and say "You have betrayed me, cower at the wrath of Caesar!" or something like that so I could then take him out with a pistol shot to the head from point blank range, but he just rushed me with all his legion buddies so I exploded them with the cannon.

I personally think everybody should play through dead money in hardcore at least once. The puzzles are fiendish at times, but playing through was one of the most satisfying gaming experiences I've ever had. The speakers, fog and traps were fiendish, but ultimately I managed it.

Most people complain that Dead Money wasn't that good, but having played it on the hardest difficulty+hardcore really added to the experience.

The tricky part is getting used to it, imo. Dead Money forces you to play cautiously and conservatively, and it can be frustrating getting used to that if you've previously been playing more run-and-gun.

For a replay I'm going with the JSawyer mod, wonder what that will look like...

The whole game should be played on hardcore. Especially the ammo weight really enhances the gameplay, as you can no longer just pick up everything and need to think about your layout.

I played Hardcore mode through once for the achievement and I said never again. I felt way too restricted by the end of the game due to being forced to have multiple weapons for various enemies. After encountering deathclaws for the first time, I realized all my weapons and ammo were useless and had to buy the .50 cal to deal with them. The final boss fight was insanely difficult as well, with my running out of ammo for most of my weapons or being 2-shotted by the Legate. I don't know if this was normal, as this was pre-DLC. It also may have been on a difficulty setting higher than normal.

As for choices, I was never happy with any of the factions. Sure, there were things I agreed with, but other things conflicted with my beliefs. Examples:

NCR - Offers order and authority similar to our time but screws over the people at the same time. Look at Primm if you have them protect it. Or Goodsprings in the ending.

Caesar's Legion - I really respect and admire that they have zero tolerance for drugs and kill dealers on sight. But that's about it. Their brutality and slave dealing is terrible, and most of their members seem to be psychotic.

House - I never thought his vision of a free Vegas was a good thing, since it basically allowed for lawlessness in the surrounding areas.

Self - I don't want to rule New Vegas -_- But it was the ending I went for in the first playthrough, so meh.

I like that all of the factions have stuff that most people will probably agree and disagree with. Makes it deeper and more realistic. Thought I'd counter with my own feelings:

-NCR: As you said, offers authority but has tendency to just roll over people. Plus, is overextended and often ineffective at really keeping order.
-Legion: I agree to a limited extent with Caesar's beliefs, it's his methods that are really insane. They are pretty much the only faction actually able to keep order in their lands though.
-House: My main problem with House is that he's too concerned with returning Vegas to its old state. It feels like a vanity project, like he wants to revive his glory days and then keep it in a little bottle. Which is a shame, because he's the best posed to do good.
-Indie: Well, it can be whatever you want. For me, it wasn't so much ruling Vegas as moving on. To one degree or another all of the Factions want to revive the past, whereas I thought it was best to instead move on and form something new. Fits in with the "Let Go" theme of the DLCs, too. :)

Personally, I keep going back and forth on Hardcore. Sometimes I like it, but sometimes I just find it annoying.

?!

I found the enemies ridiculously underpowered. Around level 20 you can pretty much kill everything as a good shooter.

And that is what I meant with thing about your layout. Choose an ammunition that serves multiple purposes. The 5.56 or better the .303 for endgame fight. Use a sniper rifle, This machine (with DLCs the battle rifle) or the unscoped hunting rifle for just about everything. 100 rounds, normal, HP, AP will get you through most and you can always get plenty of ammo fast through the gun runners shack. Or, if you are on good term with the NCR, through their ammo guy. Buy a few hundred rounds each and store them in a safhouse for easy access.

Then a smaller sidearm with lighter ammo for easier enemies. A 10mm is a good choice. "That Gun" is nice if you combine it with the Varmint/ Ratslayer for early to mid-game sniping, as it uses the 5.56 ammo. A fallback melee weapon is also nice.

Energy weapons aren't really necessary, as most robots go down very fast using AP ammo.

If you want to tackle something really difficult, like a sanctuary, you need to beef up, but that is what I like about the game. For the big assaults/challenges, you actually go home and rethink your armament.

I had a strength 6 char with a weapon on each fast slot on hardcore every time.

And the .50 is a red herring. WAY to heavy as gun or the ammo. Totally overpowered. A sniper rifle with AP ammo will work nearly as well and weights less than half of that.
The only thing I hate about hardcore is that companions can die. The main reason I don't use companions in FO3 and Skyim* is because they can die.

*Exception being Mjoll.

Yeah, it makes sense, but it's a pain. Explosives and Veronica do not mix. Dx

I can't agree with them, as I said it was one of the most satisfying gaming experiences I've ever had. The mechanics were interesting, the plot was quite good and there was plenty of play value for the money.

Unless they were playing it on easy without hardcore and cheats enabled, I'm not sure how they came to that conclusion.
