I bought the game at release, and for some reason it's now prompting me to download 18GB...

I hadn't uninstalled it or anything...

Odd, I also bought it at release, and I haven't notice Steam try to do anything similar. I seem to get a Portal 2 'patch' or whatever every couple days, but Shogun 2 has been quiet for weeks.

I downloaded the patch ages ago for DX11, hadn't played it for a while after. Not it's asking me to update it for 18GB!!

Ahh, I haven't played Shogun in over a month. Let me fire it up and see if it prompts me for a patch or something.
I just bought Shogun 2 and it's having me download 18gigs.
I ran Shogun 2 in with both DirectX 9 and DirectX 11, and I haven't been forced to download anything. I am not sure what you are seeing.

I am seeing this as well. My guess is it is simply a glitch, where some of us are having to redownload the entire game. I also paused mine during the initial patching process, in case that may be what triggered it.

I have no idea when I will ever be able to finish the download either, as there is only a small window each day where someone else isn't using the internet here, and I don't want to suck up all the bandwidth. x.x
I am downloading/installing another game currently. It could be that I will have the same issue once I am finished downloading my current game. I am unsure why this would be the case, since Portal 2 has patched while I have been downloading, but I figured I would throw that out there.

I have never tried to download/install two full games on steam simultaneously. Is it even possible? I know Steam won't allow me to redeem two codes simultaneously; whenever I try to activate a second game, it just shows me the current game download's progress. I'll post in this thread if I am prompted to re-download Shogun 2 after my current download is completed.
I think it's just a bug with Steam. Every now and then certain games I own will decide they need to redownload everything despite no updates. Usually, pausing the download, restarting Steam and then resuming the download will fix it (i.e., the download will then just cancel itself).

Doesn't always work though, sometimes, if Steam has deleted files, it'll have to redownload them. You could try setting the game to not update itself if it keeps happening, but even that setting bugs out and reverts itself from time to time.
Are you sure that the game is actually being re-downloaded and not simply verified on the disk? Some circumstances will cause Steam games to stop showing up as installed; telling it to download an affected game will then make it see the existing files again. The game will be listed as "Downloading" while it verifies the files despite no actual downloading taking place.
I had that with a few games in the past, you might be able to trick it by deleting a few small files & verifying the local cache, it may pick up the few meg missing and just redownload that

Tried, and didn't work :(

I'm not the only one either...
Did you use any mods when you played Shogun TW2 earlier? Any modding at all of the data files will cause it to re-download huge chunks of the game (as I found out when I installed the Great Divide mod). However, chances are it probably didn't delete all of it. The Total War games on Steam, when they update, will start off saying they need to download the entire game but will eventually recognize the parts you have already downloaded and then subtract those from your total download.
