Stumbled across a Red Storm game called "Shadow Watch. Playing it on Windows 7, 64 Bit, seems to run fine until the second mission, when enemies show up. They take one action, I can make one response with one charachter, then the game freezes up in the sense that I can no longer give any commands and the enemies do nothing more. I can still navigate the menus, but nothing responds on the play map.

Patch? Workaround?

Sorry, the only thing I found on internet is related to a different error, but you still might try it.

Workarounds given for that other issue (game not starting at all):
- When the game starts, a file named sw.exe is created. Copy that file and start from it.
- Update Java (http://java.com/)
- Get a javai.dll from somewhere (this link is given on the forum, use at own risk: http://www.down-dll.com/index.html?frameA=dll/j/javai.dll) and put it into the Redstorm folder
- Run in compatibility mode

I love Shadow Watch! It is a brutally difficult game at times. The interface is not very good... it is very difficult to tell which way your character is facing at times, you will often take shots from an enemy that is impossible to see, and you will waste actions because you *thought* your character was facing the right direction but s/he wasn't, etc.

Some suggestions... take a look at this game guide at GameSpot...

Secondly, know that SW is one of the few commercial store-bought games from a "big company" that actually runs on Java. It comes with it's own JRE (Java Runtime Environment version 1.1.8) that is found in the /jre/bin and /jre/lib folder. It's possible that if you have your own Java installed on the machine there might be a conflict. I've also heard people have some success replacing the JRE in these folders with a different (later) version (you might try JRE 1.4.2 from the Sun java archives). Search around and you'll find some threads on this.

I don't believe there was ever an official patch for SW, none that I've found anyway. Good luck!

Thank you. I do love the concept and look of this game, but not enough to learn how to fix it and put up with a poor interface, which I had already noticed. I appreciate the assist.

I know this post is 3 years old but I just came here to say thank you. I was looking forward to playing this finally, tried to start it and well, nothing. But a 5 minute google search later and following your instructions and bam, was greeted by a badass intro and a seriously rocking tune! Why this is not available directly from gog.com I don't know because this game is awesome!
