I don't install anything in Program Files anymore. I never had a problem with it when I was on Vista, and it doesn't matter so much now that I'm on XP, but still a good habit to break.

I just normally don't like to give games access to the root....especially newer games with multiplayer and access to the internet.

Installing all games to c:\games and making sure the folder sets any subfolder in it to full read/write access is awesome at keeping games running good and all in one place.

Ah, I don't play multiplayer games. Or at least not online. Bots, man, it's heaven.

Still it's usually better to install to C:\games as anything in there usally gets full read/write access with no hitches. In stalling to the root might mean that folder doesn't get marked with full read/write access privileges. Try installing to c:\games\sw and see what happens.

I checked and it looked like it was marked read-only, so I switched that off. Is that fine? The idea of creating a special folder for games like that freaks me out.

I had to select to apply to all sub-folders and files, but yes. As for the missing games folder, when did it start to be included automatically? I installed XP after my computer nearly died, but even when I was on Vista, I don't remember a games folder.

Also, if I wasn't just bitching, I would have made this a question thread and properly marked it as solved. Sorry... it seems to work, though.

Vista has a games folder and so does windows 7. It's where they put all those free windows games they include with every install, but other games can be installed there too.

I still don't remember one, but it's probably just poor memory. I got my computer refurbished, but that probably would be a problem, right?
