I was reading an article on Joystiq, that talked about a woman who was banned from Xbox Live for identifying herself as a lesbian.
Of course many groups of people have gotten involved since.
I personally feel that sexual orientation has no place in video games, unless you're playing a sexual video game, in which case, I don't want to hear about it.

I read an article about the same incident and looks like you can't mention your sexual orientation on your xbox live profile. That's why she was banned, not for being lesbian.

This. The people you play with online have no need to know your sexual preferences. You're playing games, not trying to get a sexual partner. Microsoft did the right thing here.

Exactly but it appears that the Gay and Lesbian alliance against defamation doesn't like it. I personally would prefer not to have to explain what sex is to my child until I feel my children are ready to understand, seeing a title that says "gay gamer" or something to that effect would potentially cause a misunderstanding and it's my right as a parent to say what I feel my child is ready for

Uh... do what every normal socially responsible parent would do? Lie.
The long term psychological effects causing all sorts of sexual confusion and frustration for your children will totally be worth avoiding the awkward situation of having to give a sex talk.

Lying would lead to a misunderstanding later, and loss of credibility. I don't want them going around saying "oh gay means happy, and I'm happy, so I must be gay."
