bearcat33: When I try to play "Earth 2150-Lost Souls" the game always crashes after only a few minutes of play. So, I figured I needed a patch.
When I try to install the 2.1 patch I get this error message:
"The directory from Earth 2150-Lost Souls wasn't found. Please install Earth
2150-Lost Souls first."
First of all, I have no idea what a "directory" is.
Second, the game definately IS already installed, it was purchased as a bundle download,
Generally, GOG games are patched to the latest patch available, since these games can be fairly old that tends to be the last patch offered by the publisher. Since the game crashes after you play for a few minutes, I tend to think it is a video driver problem or DirectX problem. Firewalls and AV programs are known to interfere with games running properly as well. I would first make sure you have the latest video driver installed before trying anything else. Check for ATI drivers
here and for Nvidia drivers
here , other drivers you will need to find yourself. After verifying you have the latest video driver or after installing the latest driver . . . if you are running Vista, right-click the game icon, click Properties, click Compatibility and check-mark "Run this program as an administrator" and try playing again.
If you downloaded the patch from the publishers website or anywhere actually, the patch is looking for the default directory the game usually installs in. All GOG games install in [your drive letter]\:Program Files\GOG.com\[your game] so the publishers patch will probably not find this install, hence the error message. Again, I believe this game is patched to the last patch offered so installing the patch is not necessary. You may be able to extract the contents of the patch manually and do a manual update using a free open source program called
7-zip . I would suggest first contacting
GOG support and verify what version their game is patched to. Use the "Technical issues with games" selection. I have only used support once to get game keys but they were very quick to respond.
For a explanation of what a directory is . . . look
here You can look at your directory tree by right-clicking the Start button and clicking on Explore. You should find this game installed on C:\Program Files\gog.com\[game name]. It will be installed in a different directory if you installed from an original CD or DVD and, as I said above, the patch could not find it if it is a GOG install.
I prefer having my GOG games install the way they do. You have an options button on the very first dialog of the GOG installer that will let you install in any directory/drive letter you want. If you know the original install location, you can install it to that directory and the patch will probably work but tell you that it is already installed.
Hope this helps. You might try posting in the
Earth game forum rather than the General Discussion forum in the future.
