I have a lone securom activation based game: Mirror's Edge. I'd take it over the steam version anyday. Since I bought it retail, even if it becomes useless, I still will always have the Still Alive remix audio cd that came with it and at least in the present have the ability to play the DLC time trial levels.

Unlike mushy who seems to have gotten the worst case scenario out of securom games, my machine has been running perfectly fine for the eight months that Mirror's Edge has been installed.

You then go to reinstall your GOG game for the umpteenth time but find your DVD has been damaged beyond repair.
GOG sadly, went out of business 2 years earlier.

You back up everything to 2 external HDs. If you really want to make sure the data is protected throw an external HD in a safe.

you'verealize yuo've broken free from gaming's grasp and reintegrate into society!

But seriously, think about this for a bit. Everyone seems to be going crazy over what's going to happen in 5-10 years. Buy the games uber cheap and live in the present instead. But there's something else. Why are we on gog.com? To buy old games we used to own or own but aren't properly compatible anymore. We can buy them on gog however and play our favorites once again. What's the difference between that, and the current situation of worrying about servers shutting down? In 5-10 years, the many new games won't be compatible with newer hardware and os's. Disregard the obvious parts about hating drm such as making it more difficult to run games in the present.

Are people usually that sloppy at code protection? No armed guards? No government archive protection subscription? No bubonic plague 2.0 on the world if a trojan so much as sniffs at my gog game files?

But my point obviously, was as Kabuto stated. Anything could happen, regardless of DRM to prevent you from using a game X years down the line. So stop worrying about it.

I've just experienced something rather amusing.

Here, in NZ, we don't have a/c.

It's one of the hottest days of the summer right now.

I was installing Silverfall and not only did my system overheat and reboot (game takes about thirty minutes to install) it corrupted the GamersGate temp files!

So now I'm redownloading 6 gigs again. It costs us $15 NZD for every ten gigs we download.

Not to knock GG but Steam simply would've just downloaded and replaced the corrupted file.

I'm sure I'll love it if I can ever get it installed.

I actually had both games installed this morning but I installed them backwards thinking that Earth Awakening should be installed first.

So Silverfall didn't update, it just overwrote Earth Awakening. Doh!

That would make more sense and prevent torrenting the game out to the entire universe - the activation being tied to a computer ID code. If it's a matter of wanting to install the same game on five different computers then there's a good chance that I'm up to something sneaky.

Of course there are always plenty of things aside from DRM that could stop you from playing a game several years down the line; that doesn't mean it still isn't worthwhile to consider the risks that DRM poses to one's future ability to play games, as well as taking steps to minimize the risks that are outside of one's control.
