I agree with kalirion and others. When these things happen (or are about to happen), someone from the GOG staff should start an official thread about it.

Something like this seems to deserve an official GOG announcement.
Have to agree with you Kalirion, I think this is something that should go on the front page of GOG. Not all users read the forums, and some not on a daily basis, so one day notice in the forum threads is likely to get missed by many, but a message on the front page (even if just a large link to a news post) would be seen by many more and might just persuade them to buy it before it has gone which would benefit GOG with a little extra income.

You know that users don't have auto-follow on sub-forums to games they don't own and this doesn't really affect those that already own the game so I think it's very justified to post it in General Discussion.

But by default, users only see forums listed in their "Game specific forums" if they have purchased the game. Otherwise the game's subforum needs manually adding to favourites or viewing all game forums in order to be made visible that there is an updated post on it, so I would imagine many users who haven't yet purchased it would miss the notification in the game's own subforum.

A front-page post may gain you some revenue (that would otherwise be missed) as it would highlight it to those who haven't yet purchased it.

As soon as we confirmed that there might be problems with the availability of Second Sight we announced it in its own forum right here. This should be enough of a warning for the people interested in this particular game. Making a big announcement that the game is being pulled might have resulted in quite a buzz and a great spike in sales for us--that's for sure--but we thought it would be in poor taste to scare our users into buying a game. Wouldn't you agree?

Apart from that, as I said earlier--we'll do our best to have it back on our offer as soon as it will be possible. Hopefully, we'll succeed.

It could potentially put them in some legal hot water as well. Maybe they shouldn't even be selling it now , in which case advertising it could be an issue.

Well, as has been mentioned, as a potential purchaser, I never would have looked in the games forum for an announcement like that. I even have to force the forum to display, since I don't own the game.

How about a compromise? An email sent out to all users who have a game wishlisted that is having licensing issues.

Yes, I saw that thread (as I already own the game) and I posted on it not long ago asking what the latest version of the installer is along with the version I have and its MD5 hash. I want to check whether I have the latest version downloaded.

As for scaring users into buying, that would depend on how you put the message across. If it were "Buy! Buy! Buy! It won't be here tomorrow!" then yes, that would be scaring users into buying it. But a "Just to make you aware, we have to remove the game from the catalogue tomorrow but will be trying to get it back soon." which doesn't encourage or discourage purchasing, I wouldn't see that as scaring users into buying. But that's just how I see it.

Legally, I suspect that would be a terrible idea. Also, what happens if we don't end up de-listing it because we manage to make some kind of last minute bargain? Then you'd feel pissed.

I think the warning was ok. Saw it, bought it (and it wasn't even on my wishlist before), so for me everything is fine. Putting such kind of news on the frontpage might be a bit too much or even counterproductive. Might lead to legal issues or to greater problems to get the license back.
