I would be more than happy to receive many more "bytes" of Red Dwarf thankyouverymuch. Everything else.....meh.
Tried getting into the new Battlestar Galactica......more meh-ness.
Tried Doctor Who and that did not hold my attention either. Perhaps this stance comes from my having read too much sci-fi. Now I just get the dreaded "seen it before" feeling.
That's my two rubles on the topic.
Sanctuary definitely didn't grab my interest, I watched the first episode and gave up halfway.
I can't believe I forgot about Sliders though, I'm fairyl certain I've seen every episode, even after the cast change made it a little crappier. And Earth: Final Conflict was great when it started, but it did get a lot worse as it went one, especially when the two alien races melded into one, then it just got ridiculously campy
Best Sci-Fi shows:
1 - Farscape: light years ahead of everything else in terms of original ideas.
2 - Firefly: So much potential.
3 - Red Dwarf. Want some toast?
4 - Babylon 5. Ok, it all went wrong at the end due to the stupid network, but most of it was great.
5 - Quantum leap. Simple but genius.
6 - Galactica... well, the first few seasons.
7 - Doctor Who. (the new one, not the old ones)
Most horrible excuse for a sci-fi show ever made, that deserves to have someone go back in time and wipe it from all existence:
Stargate and all it's hideous offspring.
Do heroes, buffy, angel and birds of prey count as sci-fi?
I rather enjoyed the free to web (Though HD versions cost the $) webisode series of Sanctuary, good for what it was. Plus, it had Amanda Tapping :)
But I gather here and elsewhere it did not shift too well to the full hour (42 minute) TV format.

You ever seen a show called Lexx? I could sit through a full episode of stargate with only a sick feeling but lexx would force me to turn it off halfway through as a survival reflex...

are you kidding? it's because they cancelled Lexx that I stopped watching the scifi channel.
Different tastes mate. Hehe, you're different & I have taste...
It's one of those shows that just did everything in exactly the opposite to the way I like. Futurama was a show that felt like it was made specifically for me, Lexx felt like it was specifically made to annoy me. Sure it's still nice to have the personalised service and all but I'd sooner the former than the latter...
to me the other shows on Scifi were just too serious at the time..
Last year i bought all five seasons of Babylon 5, and marathoned the first four. Season four wraps everything up so well, and from what i remembered about season 5... I just didn't have the heart to watch it. Im saving it for when i get really bored.
If your still on season one i would stick with it. The show really picks of during season two, and only gets better as it goes. Until it ends at the end of season four. They didn't actually think they were going to get to make a fifth season, so they squeezed everything that was meant for it into season four. Since there was always supposed to be only five seasons, that means the show really ends during season four.
There is a ton of sci-fi Anime. That's the reason i got into it in the first place. Some of the ones i like that i feel have good value as science fiction are Crest of the Stars, Banner of the Stars I&II, Yukikaze (this one is an OVA that only has 5 episodes, but i feel the need to include it), Starship Operators, and as others have said before me Planetes. There are many more, but i just included the ones i think might interest people who aren't interested in Anime.

soulgrindr: 3 - Red Dwarf. Want some toast?

"Look, I don't want any toast, and he doesn't want any toast. In fact, no one around here wants any toast. Not now, not ever. No toast!"
"How 'bout a muffin?"
"Or muffins! Or muffins! We don't like muffins around here! We want no muffins, no toast, no teacakes, no buns, baps, baguettes or bagels, no croissants, no crumpets, no pancakes, no potato cakes and no hot-cross buns and definitely no smegging flapjacks!"
"Aah, so you're a waffle man!"

it is one of my favorite episodes.
"so you can answer any question in the universe?"
"yes."
"well... would you like some toast?"

I saw one or two episodes of Lexx on late night tv. I didn't really like it, but i appreciated that they were at least TRYING something original.
(there are quite a few similarities between Lexx and Farscape... except that farscape was simply much much better. )
Stargate on the other hand is both terrible AND lazy.

Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles started out pretty badly (as do most Sci-fi shows i've noticed), but its showing signs of awesomeness (towards the end of S1 and in the beginning of S2). Plus it's got River from Firefly in it ;-)
Not sure its really sci-fi, but Jericho was pretty good, though very slow to get going, and (as with many of my favorites) canceled early.

"You'll bonk anything won't you, Lister?" says RImmer after witnessing Lister trying to help Kryten with his interestingly mounted vacuum cleaner attachment....

Just because I'm a nitpicker, let me mention that it is in fact Kryten who is helping Lister, and the thing he is helping him with, is pulling off his shrinking underpants. But it's correct that Kryten has his, as you so eloquently put it, "interestingly mounted" vacuum cleaner attachment, uhm, attached. ;-)
Oh, and the episode is "Polymorph", another all time favourite.
Best quote from that episode:
RIMMER: I think we're all beginning to lose sight of the real issue here, which is: what are we going to call ourselves? I think it comes down to a choice between "The League Against Salivating Monsters" or, my own personal preference, which is "The Committee for the Liberation and Integration of Terrifying Organisms and their Rehabilitation Into Society." One drawback with that--the abbreviation is CLITORIS. :-D
