If it's true, could be interesting, considering the timing. It's no secret that Sony and Microsoft are working on their own next gen consoles right now. Is Nintendo trying to bring back the core gamer to the Nintendo market? Very profitable either way.
I don't see Microsoft or Sony unveiling a new console. Sony really has no reason to as they're not even tapping into 20% of the hardware of the PS3.

But yea, I think Nintendo has got to step up their console to a comparable level to at least the 360 in the HD age.

Ha.

That said I agree with you that MS and Sony will not be announcing or releasing new consoles for quite a while.

They aren't revealing it at E3, but there have been reports that both companies have started working on them. I wouldn't expect a PS4 or Xbox 3 until at the earliest Summer 2012, but realistically Summer 2013.

Makes me wonder if we can see a pattern in Nintendo's development cycle:

NES = Younger audience
SNES = Broad audience

N64 = Younger audience
Gamecube = Broad audience

Wii = Younger audience
Rumored console = Broad audience

Neither Sony nor MS have finalized designs yet though rumor says AMD wins on the graphics from for MS again and may have got the next gen Sony system
At this point, I really don't see a need for Microsoft or Sony making a new console. They are what the companies lose the most money on and, at this point, the software needs to catch up with the hardware.

I have to agree with this IF either Sony or MS unveil a new console it will be a few years before I buy it because I'm okay with my 360 at the moment. Though if Nintendo wants to release a new HD console that't A-OKAY with me just means I'll finally pick up a old Wii finally, maybe 100$ or 150$ and finally play the Zelda games that I haven't had a chance to.

As a PC gamer I want new consoles simply so we can get some graphics advancement on PC. A lot of people seem to think 360 is "good enough" but I don't.

Yea. I think that's the thing. For Microsoft and Sony, I don't think there's a demand for a new console because a lot of console gamers are content with the quality of graphics.

And yes, this ends up meaning we get a lot of games that are toned down graphically, but for me, a lot of these games aren't enticing to begin with due to the decline in gameplay nuance that has plagued the past 10 years or so of gaming.
I own a 360 and PS3 and game on PC, but Nintendo won't see a dime from me 'til there console is HD. There are games I really like from Nintendo, but I just can't get past those jagged edges.

I couldnt care much anymore. The last couple versions of the ds and the wii werent of any use to me till a year or more after they launched.

I dont like nintendos first party games because all they do is shit out the same games over and over again. Zelda, mario, metroid, donkey kong and pokemon over and over and over and over again. I never understood it, activision gets bitched out by everyone for making the same old franchises over and over again but nintendo gets praise for it. People bitch about a call of duty every year (but still buy millions of them) but are happy when nintendo pinches off a new super mario game. To make it worse now they are just re-releasing old games to sell again for the 3ds.

Only good games on nintendo systems are the ones released by like atlus or nis or some other smaller niche company. The mainstream stuff on nintendo systems is mostly pure shit for a year or so because they dont have quality control anymore they will let anyone make any game for it long as a paycheck is involved and why they end up with so many crap games on their systems.

I just hope whatever it is that its something new because nintendo has a habit of just upgrading their stuff and releasing it as new. LIke the wii is essentially a gamecube with motion controllers that boil down to either shaking the controller for mini games or pointing a cursor for onrails shooters. The 3ds is essentially a upgraded ds, every ds they release has a new feature or two built onto it that evolves painfully slow over the years instead of just making something new they stick a few new things on the current system and say its new. Thats why it still has DS in its name is because its still just a ds.

Besides, I dont think we need new systems. We just need better quality games and companies to stop just making the same old shit. Look at all the more powerful systems to come out over the years that failed because the games on it sucked? New hardware doesnt mean better games.

Then you are not a real gamer. Your a fake gamer.

If graphics make a game good then tell me honestly. Hannah montana on the ps3 is in HD, does that mean its better than every single nes, snes, genesis, 1980s arcade, collecovision, atari 2600 and basically any game pre HD graphics? I mean because by your logic it is because it has better graphics.

Besides if your that hung up on graphics why are you on this site? There is what maybe 3 games on this whole site that are graphically not inferior to you?

Hate to tell ya chief, but you don't decide that. I mean, I agree with you overall, but that line is pretty shitty.
Nintendo releasing a console that's not clearly marketed at kids and families? I just don't see it.

Of course Sony, Nintendo, and Microsoft are all working on their next-gen console. The next-gen development started when the current gen was released. Some of this development has resulted in updated versions of the current consoles.

Basically all that article says is something like "Audi reportedly working on the next model of the A3". Well, duh. It's not breaking news, it's obvious that they are and have been for some time. What else could they be up to?

I don't really think that the Wii was specifically targeted at a younger audience nor that it mainly was bought by/for that group. Things like the Wii Fit and the party focus of a lot of the adverts opened up older non-gamers as a market; one that neither Microsoft nor Sony's consoles really tapped into. I have friends in their 60s that bought the Wii - people that'd never touched any form of gaming before that point. Likewise loads of people in their mid 30s, that really used it as an electronic equivalent to social board game evenings.

I beg to differ, but only because when I see the majority of the games at Gamestop or Target, they are all catering to a younger, or at least the casual market. You rarely see any Triple A third party titles on it. Nintendo, as stated earlier, recycles all their franchises.

Also, to gargus: Your reasoning is flawed. Graphics CAN impact a game. Look at Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory for the PS2/Cube and then the Xbox/PC versions and tell me which you would rather play. Or for more recent games, look at the Modern Warfare: Reflex Edition compared to the PS3/360/PC versions.

As far as exclusive titles, yeah, I'll play a game that has jaggies if its good. I do it all the time with PC games, and am forced to if I play a PS2/Cube game since it lacks any form of HD support for my 47 inch LCD TV.
