Barefoot_Monkey: The Bard's Tale (2004) does an excellent job of toying with roleplaying clichés throughout the entire game.

Roman5: Gotta love it's "Obligatory Lava level"
Which is also a Platform game cliché, of course, along with the obligatory inertiaific Ice level - you hardly ever get one without the other in platformers!

Fever_Discordia: RUSes - Rodents of Unusual Size!
(I'll plus the first person to get the ref)
ROUSs? I don't think they exist...

They do, but are no match for the dread pirate Roberts!

That is true. After all, he never leaves survivors.

On topic: are there actually any worth-playing pirate style RPGs? And if so, what cliches can be applied specifically to them?

ktchong: Too many RPGs - especially those made by BioWare - focus on the main playable character saving the kingdom, republic, empire, world, the Earth, or universe.

For once, I would like to see a RPG that is about a personal quest. Like avenging dead father, mother, wife, family. Or finding or saving a lost love. Or something more on a personal level.

Better yet, let's has this epic event like an all-out war going on in the background. but that is only the backrdrop. You are not to stop the war or save everyone. You are not the "chosen one", or the "last and only hope". The story or gameplay focuses on your characters and the people close to the characters, on a more personal level. Overall, your playable characters has very control or influence on what is going on in the war/world, but the gameplay focuses on how the characters progress/survive/change/interact as all the major events are going on in the background.
Well, Bioware tried that pretty much exactly for Dragon Age 2. It didn't work.

Inconcieveable!

Well if you want to be pedantic, it goes like this:

Buttercup: But Wesley, what about the ROUSs?
Wesley: Rodents Of Unusual Size? I don't think they exist...
The main character has amnesia (well this cliche spans most genres)
but mostly RPGs

l0rdtr3k:
Slightly OT but it always striked me as cunning, the way in the TV series 'Knighrider' they could double up the clichéd plots
ie there was the 'Michael has Amnesia' ep then the 'Kitt has Amnesia' ep then 'Michael has an evil twin' ep then 'Kitt has an evil twin' ep
etc!

Don't you mean AaaarrrPGs?

Risen 2 is coming out soon. Thar be a fine shipmate, me thinks.

Sea Dogs 1 and SD2 (aka Pirates of the Caribbean) plus the fully patched Age of Pirates will fit the bill nicely. As for the cliches:

- The Black Ship: Evil pirate ship, black sails, blah blah blah
- Evil Foreign Culture curse: Must be lifted to save the world of this evil
- Tortuga: Pirates have a hold, it's got anarchy, bitches love anarchy
- Sabers 'n guns: No other weapon available
- Little piece of paradise: The only place pirates ever existed was the Caribbean. Period.

Curiously, there was no specific "pirate" talk there. It did however appear in Gothic 2 Gold.

Leroux: I guess there's a thin line between great, powerful, legendary heroes and monsters murderers and other threats in the RPG world. At least from the peasant's point of view.
Yeah, that video is great. :D It does kind of sum up so much of what's wrong with a lot of RPGs out there. People just don't react to what you're doing unless it's somehow relevant to the storyline. You can blame Bethesda for a lot of things, but they do at least try to somewhat address that.

You forgot buried tresure with a map where 'X' marks the spot!

On general RPG clichés again
Towns populated with a bunch of people all called 'townsperson' all with exactly the same conversation tree!
(I know I'm only supposed to have one go but, what can I say, I'm greedy *burp*)
