Shin Megami Tensei is my favorite JRPG series, particularly for all of the PS2 entries.

Digital Devil Saga
Digital Devil Saga 2

Persona 2
Persona 3
Persona 4
Imagine
Devil Survivor
Strange Journey
RPG: Star Treck and Medival LotR ripoffs
JRPG: futuristic Loli and shota
Now trolling aside, I grew up with JRPGs from the 90s till 2004. My best experiences were
Earth Bound
Soul Blazer
Illusion of Gaia
Terranigma
Secret of Mana
Secret of Evermore
Vargant Story
Alundra
Shadow Hearts 1 and 2
Parasite Eve 1 and 2
Kingdom Hearts.
I doubt anyone likes KH here, but you guys should seriously try out the other ones. They are so goddamn epic.

Kingdom Hearts was brill!
Not only was there nostalgia factor, but the game has a great engine, nice plot, and some beautiful graphics of its time.
If I ever see it cheap enough pre-owned I'm gonna get KH2 as well.
As for JRPGs, we have Septerra Core.
And various RPG maker based games made by small developers.
Its a shame JRPGs have generally been ignored on the PC platform, as a modern pc could provide some very creative twists on the genre as a whole.
Thanks, I thought I was alone on that matter 83
Anyway:
Secret of Mana
Secret of Evermore
Soul Blazer
Illusion of Gaia
Terranigma
Alundra
Shadow Hearts
Kingdom Hearts
Alundra > Every Zelda game

The more times I play through Earthbound, the more convinced I am that it was possibly the finest of the SNES RPGs.
Most of the attention it gets is for its odd sense of humor, and when I was a kid that's mainly what I appreciated about it, but the nuance of the story and its understated emotional currents didn't shine through for me until I was older.

Whats it like compared to chrono trigger? That and (some of) the final fantasy series are really the only Jrpgs I've ever played and enjoyed.

Chrono Trigger is an excellent game. It's a bit hard to compare the two, since the style is pretty different. Earthbound takes place in modern-day suburbia (and elsewhere), and doesn't take itself as seriously as Chrono Trigger; you'll battle space creatures, robots and modern art on your quest to put an end to an invasion by an abstract alien intelligence.
Mechanically speaking, the game is simpler than Chrono Trigger; combat is fairly straightforward and plays out on a first-person battlefield over psychedelic music and weird pulsating backgrounds. Graphics are deliberately crude as a sort of throwback to the game's predecessor (Mother), but they have their own charm.
Unlike Chrono Trigger, thematic elements are much more important to Earthbound's story than the actual events that unfold. It has a very unique, almost hazy presentation. Nostalgia, growing up, and the love of family and friends are important themes. Unlike many RPGs, though (even the great ones), it's rarely if ever gushy or prone to purple prose.
My personal interpretation is that Ness has long since grown up, and that the events of the game are shown to the player through the filter of his memories; he's looking back on the adventure that he had many years ago, and we're looking back with him.
As a side note, the English localization is stellar. You'd never know it wasn't written in English in the first place.
It's definitely a niche game. Not everyone will appreciate it.

BREAKING NEWS:
http://www.strategyinformer.com/news/8006/bioware-you-can-put-a-j-in-front-of-it-but-final-fantasy-13-isnt-an-rpg
I would say that Earthbound is closer to Maniac Mansion than it is to Final Fantasy. Sure it plays like a turn-based role playing game, but it's so full of quirkly humor and off-the-wall characters that it doesn't feel like your typical jrpg or wrpg.
Which, by the way, I'm tired of this JRPG vs WRPG distinction and that comment by the Bioware guy just drives that home. It seems like ever since those terms started getting thrown around there has been this tension between the two cultural influences. I like both types of games, so it bugs me to see the division with people thinking they need to side with one or the other.
