Hello,

I'm hoping someone can help me find a certain type of game.

Really looking for one that is RPG in the literal sense, you play as a certain role and play it out. These days RPG means Fallout 3 and Oblivion.. something where you pick up weapons, armor, improve stats, that's not what I'm looking for at all.

Something that is choice focused and story. I haven't really found anything like that so I can't give examples. But something more text based than reflex based

Planescape torment has some stats but it is heavily choice based.
The funny thing, is that RPGs with a lot of choices are generally more reliant on logical stat checks, than RPGs with no choices or only the illusion of choice.
Fallout 1 & 2, as well as New Vegas to some extent, have a lot of choices.
Arcanum and Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines also have a lot of choices, but both also have certain parts that are very linear and tedious.

Agreed. Good RPGs are those where your stats are a part of your character and partly determine what role you can play, instead of just determining whether you're good at killing stuff.

For instance, don't expect to be good at talking to people with a low intelligence and charisma in Fallout 1&2 or Arcanum, no matter how high your speech/persuasion is.

Bloodlines and PS:Torment also did this well. Unfortunately, mainstream games have now given up on that kind of character development and focus on combat.
Maybe you can find some indie games that will fit what you're looking for, this one looks promising for instance, provided it ever gets released.
The Last Express

Looks like something that may be close to what you want. Haven't played it but it seems like there are a lot of choices and seems to not be reflex based. This looks good though. maybe I should get it someday. This one is available here on GOG.

Culpa Innata

Looks basically what you're describing from what read about it. However, the game also got terrible reviews it seems. Haven't a clue how good it is but it seems like a game that is sort of like the old skool puzzle adventure games but most of the time is spent talking and making choices and supposedly those choices have a large impact on the story I think. Was curious about getting it but it seemed the game had some problems. This one is available on Steam.

Witcher dont have any stat's ;p
G'day RUSBoris

Why not have a look at Academagia - The Making of Mages. It's mostly text based, concentrates on characters in the story, and can be quite overwhelming with the choices you have, from what I've read about it

EDIT: spelling failure

RUSBoris, you'll be wanting Kings of Dragon Pass. You're welcome.

It sounds like you're looking for something that's more adventure-esque.

I could recommend Frederick Pohl's Gateway and Gatway II: Homeworld games. They were freaking incredible adventures. They're not in the GOG catalog, though, and good luck finding legit copies anywhere except in collections like mine. :P (Also on the "Not in the GOG catalog" genre, I could also recommend the Legacy of Kain series.)

My oddball pick for a game with great story and no real stat tracking is StarCon II, though. I'd call it an "action RPG", but not exactly like Mass Effect or Fallout 3. ;)
I second GameRager's suggestion of Planescape: Torment -- there are some stats and gear but the main focus of the game is the story and how your decisions affect that story.

I would suggest Fallout: New Vegas as well, as I think it did a MUCH better job than Fallout 3 at storytelling and C&C, but a lot of the available choices in dialog are directly tied to your skills/stats, so it might not be what you're looking for.

Can't get much more text based than Interactive Fiction! http://ifdb.tads.org/

Did you actually successfully FINISH Gateway? I gave up in despair in the pre-gamefaqs days :/

I beat Gateway II (which I bought first) without a guide. Gateway I, I recall, I got on some bargain-bin CD. And used GameFaqs to finish it. I seem to recall something on Aleph 4 completely defeated me.
well..

indy and atlantis is rpg in literal sense of that term together with choices which affect your gameplay.

and it is very fun. graphics wise is awful but somehow i didn't mind (while i do mind graphics in GK sins of father)

edit:
also what about indigo prophecy? lots of simon says minigamplays which at first were horrible then i got used to and were not that bad only to suck again at the end (simon says boss fight for 10 min was a bit too much)
but story is great for most parts and i did enjoy the characters you got to play.

I second Indigo Prophecy. Beautiful tale of a game, I played it on the original Xbox. Would not really recommend it for PC unless you have a controller for your PC. If you play the demo, you'll see why. The uncut version of it is known as Fahrenheit, also the name it released under in Europe.
