Are these mainly Korean MMOs? I could just say JRPG's and KMMOs and be done with it, that should be about 90% of all scantily clad women in games.

The example that springs to mind for me was world of warcraft. I remember playing with a friend who had a male character and i had a female character. I had on some gear - it was slighly less revealing than a bra and undies. I then traded it to his male character. It looked like regular armour.

At the time it wasn't a huge issue for me, I thought it was funny, but I am old and cynical and grumpy now.

Honestly though, that's just a Githyanki thing. The armor in NWN 2 is very sensible for men and women. I just find that picture hilarious.

Begging your pardon, however I had actually pointed to an entire list over at TVTropes. Alfie, instead asked regarding specifically Western examples. I was simply going off memory of which characters were exposed in their outfits. I made no comment as to their character, nor their portrayal. The only requirements in answering Alfie's question were:

I want to see this list of offending games since with all the games I've ever played I'm struggling to come up with one on my own. But with all this internet rage I'm assuming it's actually huge.

No mention was made as to whether or not they were strong characters. The only requirements to fill were, 1. scantily clad, and 2. in a western video game.

When I think of modern Western video game companies, I think of Blizzard, Ubisoft, and BioWare. I then thought, what characters do I know, fit these requirements? The above list was simply what I could recall on short notice. I am by no means an expert in scantily clad video game characters. Catherine from HOMM III for instance, is a very strong character, indeed one of the strongest women characters I can think of. That does not mean, I am not going to acknowledge butt-shots when I see them, especially when her armor is accented to highlight said region. Adrienne, again from HOMM III, is another strong character. She is also, however, dressed in a literal chainmail bikini on the box art. Again though, neither strength of character nor strength of writing was called into question. Merely dress-code.

Well the thing is most scantily clad characters in video games are more than just eye candy anyway. They have their own stories and kick arse, save the world, are fully capable etc etc.But people reduce the character's down to their appearance and the biggest offender of making scantily clad women is the Asian market. The problem is nobody seems to identify the difference between the Western and Asian video games.

Now, I'm no media analyst, but I always thought that the country of origin was an important part of understanding a piece of media. Different cultures, different ideals. This whole argument is about representation of women in video games and the examples people generally give (RPS, Kokatu, Escapist, Anita etc) are a majority from Asian games. It's different cultures. It's like the difference between American cinema (violence) and European cinema (sex/nudity). I'm sure there are many Western games that feature women in pointlessly revealing outfits but I bet the list of Asian games is much bigger and the examples far more ridiculous. I don't know if women characters are better written or are more prominent in Asian games. I don't really play them. But it's the visual depictions what are getting peoples goat.

Totally agree with you. Frankly, I think that further undermines the basis of much of the criticism of Sarkeesian and the like. They largely use Japanese games to provide examples of negative presentation of women in games (and use it to attack western developers/publishers) but seem completely oblivious to the fact that they are not at all representative of the issue in western products (heck, even if there's two female characters looking very similar in a western game and a Japanese game the implications are completely different ones due to the cultural background). And frankly, I think those puny western activists with degrees in fields that have nothing to do with their activism are making asses of themselves assaulting Japanese products and putting them one the same lists as western games. It's hard to surpass that level of ignorance. Of course the depiction of women in those games is heavily sexualized when their whole society has a completely different stance when it comes to gender issues, one that our beloved activists aren't aware of and certainly not qualified to talk about - and one that they certainly will never be able to change.

Not to mention that the cultural differences in games are huge not only when it comes to gender issues. For instance the depiction of war is *completely* different in Eastern European games than western ones. There's little to none of that Clancyesque "hightech! surgical precision! quick and clean! playing GOOOOD!" naivety even when the games depict military operations of western military forces.

It's just my opinion but I think that video games could be more open to modern realities and maybe instead of lacking behind and sticking to the same old role cliches, just do business from a refreshing young, everything goes angle. Most of RPGs I played had male heroes and this gets boring when it's alway the same. Now I don't mean that women shouldn't be displayed as objects of sexual desire and men as "can do things" heroes but there should be more of the opposite too. Don't know if this would be a big commercial success but I would totally buy it.

That's the most sane statement I've seen in this whole thread so far.
