Starmaker: There's loads ugly rape apologia in this thread, some Dunning-Kruger on the side, and a lack of empathy that'd get you killed as a replicant.
Thought exercise: imagine you got drunk with your dudebros and some of them raped you. Or inserted an eel in your asshole. If you nevar evar get drunk, imagine it happened to a relative who does.
I see, so you're one of those assholes that thinks that it's up to the state to prevent all cases of rape. And probably to monitor men to make sure that we don't do any raping? Thought exercise: imagine you got drunk with your dudebros and some of them raped you. Or inserted an eel in your asshole. If you nevar evar get drunk, imagine it happened to a relative who does.
I'm sorry, but if you're foolish enough not to take steps to protect yourself, then you're partially responsible. Rapes wouldn't happen if there were no available victims. You're not going to stop psychopaths from behaving like that, but with education, you can at least make it hard to find victims.
But, is that why women buy those books? I doubt it, they could get the cover image for free if that's what they wanted. It's the content of the book that they're buying. Having Fabio on the cover is just a hint that it's a romance novel.

Not to mention that women would be far more into porn if they were that impressed by muscular bodies. Evan Stone is the porn doppelganger of Fabio and how many women know him? :P

If your woman tells you she's not watching porn at all - she's lying to you, bro :P But I think having Fabio on a cover may be a trigger for buying a book for a woman. I don't know, I am interested in many books because they have an interesting (in different ways) cover. It's often disappointing, but well...
I don't like reading book samples in online stores, for example, because for me it's just like reading spoilers for a movie before watching it :P
hedwards: I'm sorry, but if you're foolish enough not to take steps to protect yourself, then you're partially responsible
I wouldn't say responsible, because that is dangerously close to "you shouldn't dress like a slut" type of argument. But it's a scientific FACT that some people are more likely to be a victim of a crime and by willingly increasing your chances to be a victim, well... You are a pretty dumb and immature person.

It was mostly a facetious one-off comment, but Fabio's female fans used to be pretty legendary.

F4LL0UT: Fun fact: many (if not most) heavily sexualized female characters are designed by female artists who look like regular or even particularly nerdy women themselves.
Really? Do you actually believe this "fact" you've manufactured from whole cloth? Gimme a source or get out.

seaspanky: And what balance is this exactly that you are referring to? You know, the one that is always vaguely described but never defined. What exactly does a "balanced portrayal of gender in video games" entail exactly? An equality of outcomes? Where the "portrayal of gender" matches the real life percentages of women vs men, or male vs female video game players? What exactly? I think that the reason I have yet to see this defined is because once it is defined, it loses its edge and power to leverage and control, something that it has when it is purposely vague and ambiguous. The obvious answer would be there should be no forced or contrived "balanced portrayal of gender in video games" because that only serves the interests of the pressure group demanding unequal protection and status. I, as the end consumer, am best served by a standard that allows for and promotes the ability of creators to create their works and then have the market decide what makes it or doesn't based on some kind of standard of excellence, rather than false contrived standards of political correctness and racial/gender quotas.
So not portraying women as nothing more than sex objects is a contrived standard of political correctness and gender quotas? Balanced portrayal of gender in video games only serves the interests of the pressure group demanding unequal protection and status, and not the interests of female gamers? Why should we care about female gamers, right? We're not female, we're manly man men! I thought I gave a very reasonable example of "balanced portrayl of gender in video games". Having overly sexualised female characters is fine, alright. Can there also be female characters that are not obvious objects of sexual gratification? If it is a game that is mostly about sexual gratification, then perhaps the male characters can also simply be objects of sexual gratification- and I repeat again, there is a difference between being a buff power fantasy for men, and an object of sexual gratification (for men or for women).
seaspanky: The reason that there was a reduction in the production of Westerns wasn't because moviegoers suddenly realized that what they loved was actually nothing more than "heroic cowboys gleefully kill the savage and villainous red indians". You couldn't know or understand westerns and then twist and distort the entire genre like that.
I think you completely misunderstood my point. I did not in any way say that Westerners have had a reduction in popularity. Django Unchained is a perfect example against that. What I said that cowboy movies with "heroic cowboys gleefully kill the savage and villainous red indians" aren't really made anymore, despite being quite popular up until the early 60s (The Searchers is still considered one of the best Western movies ever), because of (completely justified) public perception against them.Post edited November 26, 2013 by babark

Just like I'd love to see more women in gaming industry, it's not necessarily because women are not allowed there. Since indie gaming blossomed, I haven't seen so many new women in the industry. Maybe it's because there are actually less female programmers, coders and software developers?

W. T. F. http://www.statisticbrain.com/rape-statistics/
Look where the rape happens: more than a third of the time it happens in the victim's own home. More than half of the time, it happens with someone that the woman knows--and presumably trusted to not, you know, rape her. Slut-shaming and blaming the victim is low, but saying that rape would't happen if so many women weren't just asking for it?
Ugh.

And Jews were at least partially to blame for the Holocaust - they should have hid better. Yup, Jews were more likely to be victims of the Holocaust. They should've stopped being Jews maybe?

Your analogy doesn't work, you know. All I've said, even though it doesn't excuse the criminal, it's not reasonable for example to go to to the stadium's sector in the opposite team's colours.
But I guess requesting from people to take care about themselves is too much in this world.

DMTrev: Slut-shaming and blaming the victim is low, but saying that rape would't happen if so many women weren't just asking for it?
To me, this is not some slut-shaming or mindless victim blaming, this is just pure logic. The main idea here isn't "Ah! She dressed like a slut! She deserved it!" but "Stay safe.".
It's all about minimizing the probability of rape by minimizing the factors controlled by the potential victim since the factors controlled by the rapist are just out of control.
How can you minimize the risk of being raped/abused while any ill intentioned sociopathic man or woman could rape/abuse you? Well, you just control your behavior, your appearance, your body language, your frequentation, your circle of friends...
"But we should be free to do whatever we want!", you could tell me. Yeah sure, and I'm all for it. But if you are in a potentially hostile environment, where great people mixes with awful one, where a high alcohol consumption might make you lose your senses... you have to understand that you are knowingly taking risks by doing whatever you want.
So, are "women asking for it"? Absolutely not. But there are scumbags who think so, and all that is asked of you is balancing risks you are taking and able to control, versus rewards.
